Tag & Tax Clerk
JOB SUMMARY
This position is responsible for assisting in the processing of all tag and tax applications.
MAJOR DUTIES
· Collects taxes for tags and ad valorem taxes.
· Processes title applications for taxpayers; issues plates.
· Collects property taxes and issues homestead decals.
· Notarizes forms for customers.
· Balances cash, checks, and the credit card.
· Processes payments received in the mail.
· Re-stocks tags as necessary.
· Verifies paid property taxes for lawyers and finance companies.
· Assists customers with bonded titles.
· Explains tax statements and penalties to the public.
· Prints and mails correspondence letters to delinquent taxpayers.
· Answers tax questions in person and over the phone.
· Maintains confidential information in accordance with legal standards and/or county regulations.
· Changes addresses as notified.
· Registers trailers.
· Assists in delinquent property tax evaluation and payment arrangements for delinquent accounts.
· Performs other related duties as assigned.
KNOWLEDGE REQUIRED BY THE POSITION
· Knowledge of title processing procedures.
· Knowledge of assessing delinquent tax accounts.
· Knowledge of accounting principles.
· Skill in interpersonal communications.
· Skill in computer operations.
· Skill in organization and time-management.
SUPERVISORY CONTROLS
The Tax Commissioner assigns work in terms of somewhat general instructions. The supervisor spot-checks completed work for compliance with instructions and established procedures, accuracy, and the nature and propriety of the final results.
GUIDELINES
Guidelines include legislation for tax and tag procedures, department guidelines, and Upson County Employee Handbook. These guidelines are generally clear and specific but may require some interpretation in application.
COMPLEXITY/SCOPE OF WORK
· The work consists of varied tag and tax processing duties. Waiting on state response to resolve certain issues contributes to the complexity of the position.
· The purpose of this position is to assist in ensuring citizens are registered properly and taxes are paid. Successful performance helps ensure taxes are collected to keep the county and state running.
CONTACTS
· Contacts are typically with the general public, bank representatives, lawyers, loan officers, title searchers, state tax service, insurance agencies, DDS, real estate agencies, tax offices, car dealers, Building & Zoning, Tax Assessor’s Office, Sheriff’s department, and Clerk’s Office.
· Contacts are typically to give or exchange information and to provide services.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS/ WORK ENVIRONMENT
· The work is typically performed while sitting at a desk or table. The employee occasionally lifts light objects.
· The work is typically performed in an office, library, or computer room.
SUPERVISORY AND MANAGEMENT RESPONSIBILITY
None.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
· Ability to read, write, and perform mathematical calculations at a level commonly associated with the completion of high school or equivalent.
· Sufficient experience to understand the basic principles relevant to the major duties of the position, usually associated with the completion of an apprenticeship/internship or having had a similar position for one to two years.

Pay: From $13.79 per hour
