URBAN HARVEST STL: Education Coordinator

Urban Harvest STL builds a community around inclusive and resilient local food systems across a network of urban farms in St Louis. All community members should have equitable access to fresh, healthy food regardless of socioeconomic status, race, or location. We grow healthy produce across a network of urban farms in the heart of St. Louis and donate the majority of the harvest to nonprofit partners serving communities with limited or non-existent access to healthy, nutritious food. Urban Harvest STL also educates and engages the surrounding community in these efforts.

Position
The Education Coordinator will work in close collaboration with the Director of Education to realize the goals of our Farm Training initiatives: the Farming for Community Apprenticeship and Farmer in Training program. The Education Coordinator will implement the Apprenticeship and Farmer in Training curriculum, liaise with external partners, lead hands-on learning opportunities, and facilitate educational experiences at the Grandel Square Demonstration Farm. They are directly accountable to the Director of Education with strong collaboration expected with Farm Managers, the Farm Engagement Coordinator (FEC), and the Director of Urban Agriculture.

The Site
Farm training programs are based at the Grandel Square Center for Urban Agriculture. Located in the heart of the Grand Arts District, the Center will explore the intersection of art and agriculture, while demonstrating low to no-cost farming techniques. When complete, the space will include a demonstration farm, classroom, community gathering space, agricultural tool lending library, and a community-supported agriculture program. This position will also require some travel and work with apprentices and farmers in training across the network of farms in collaboration with farm managers.

Compensation

The position is full-time; the work schedule will be 5 days per week, with work required Tuesday-Saturday and occasional evenings. Compensation is $43,000 annually and includes a $200 monthly healthcare reimbursement (QSEHRA), 403(B) retirement plan, paid wellness days, holidays, and vacation. Annual cell phone reimbursement at $50 per month is provided in November. Using a personal vehicle may be necessary for Urban Harvest STL business, with mileage reimbursement at the federal mileage reimbursement rate.

Responsibilities

  • Facilitate farm education within the Farmers in Training (FIT) and Farming for Community Apprenticeship programs, such as providing instruction on core farming skills, assisting with orientation, program evaluation, and assessments
  • Coordinate and implement on-farm demonstrations and weekly educational seminars according to program syllabus and schedule
  • Provide mentorship and support skill development of trainees, both during farm shifts and in one-on-one sessions
  • Manage routine communication with program participants and partners using email and Slack
  • High level of organizational skills and management of administrative tasks, including documentation and photos of training activities, accurate and timely entry of harvest data, and time allocated for weekly staff meetings, farmer meetings, programmatic meetings, coaching sessions, etc.
  • Collaborate and communicate with internal team members to ensure the implementation of educational opportunities according to program needs and schedules
  • Cultivate and maintain external partnerships to deliver content and provide community-based training, including coordination of field trip opportunities with farms in the St. Louis region
  • Follow crop plan, harvest schedule, and farm operation guidelines at Grandel Farm in collaboration with the Director of Urban Agriculture
  • Ensure that the farm site, high tunnel, storage areas, and farming tools are clean and well-maintained for program events and work shifts
  • Maintain and adhere to a weekly work log to plan and record details of fieldwork and administrative tasks accomplished
  • Track information and outcomes as required for grants and assist with the preparation of grant reports
  • Breakdown of effort as follows: Farmer in Training (30%), Apprenticeship Program (25%), Farming tasks at Grandel (20%), Administrative tasks (20%), and other duties as assigned (5%)

Qualifications & Skills

  • Two full seasons or more of organic and/or regenerative growing experience (farm or garden)
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills; a passionate communicator with excellent interpersonal and multidisciplinary project skills
  • Ability to juggle multiple priorities, work independently, and effectively manage time
  • Experience implementing formal or informal education programs, mentorship and coaching, and/or facilitation of volunteers
  • Enthusiasm for educating community members and the ability to work effectively with diverse groups of people and stakeholders
  • A passion for urban agriculture, health, food justice, and community development
