What are the responsibilities and job description for the Hydroponics Specialist position at Urban Ventures?
Under the direction of the Farm and Nutrition Director, the Hydroponics Specialist will manage the entire process from seed to harvest, including system maintenance and optimization at Urban Ventures Minneapolis site. The Farm & Nutrition program strives to nurture a diverse group of young leaders through the meaningful work of growing and eating nutritious food.
Responsibilities:
Manage the hydroponic operations at the Minneapolis Urban site. This entails;
- Cleaning and preparing the ponds
- Creating a schedule for hydroponic vegetable production
- Testing, amending, and refilling the water in the ponds
- Washing, weighing, and logging the harvested crops
Communicate hydroponics practices to relevant groups. This may entail;
- Showing Seasonal Farm Interns the operations
- Describing the work to volunteer groups or other farm tours
- Teach the basics of hydroponics to Summer Ventures or other Farm Program educational groups
Supervisory Responsibilities:
- None
Required Skills/Abilities:
- Prior experience in vegetable production, particularly hydroponics (additional on-site training and resources will be provided)
- Have the ability to independently plan and implement a season-long growing schedule
- Processes the ability to be focused on task while producing high quality results.
- Has the ability to adapt to changing business needs
- Ability to follow directions, ask for clarification, and execute tasks efficiently
- Volunteer or Experience with youth

Education and Experience:
- High School Diploma or GED
Physical and Environmental Requirements:
- Physical stamina and ability to work in a fast-paced outdoor environment
- Work is performed both indoors and outdoors.
Outside work requires exposure to varying weather and terrain conditions, noise, fumes, odors, gases; exposure to moving equipment and occasional exposure to toxic or caustic chemicals, extreme heat, wet/humid conditions, open or confined spaces, intermittent vibration and noise.
- While performing the duties of this job, the employee may be regularly required to stand, sit, talk, hear, reach, stoop, kneel, and use hands and fingers to operate a computer, telephone, and keyboard
- Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision requirements due to computer work
- Moderate to heavy lifting may be required
- Regular, predictable attendance is required
Work hours:
- Part time up to 12 hours per week, flexible based on weather and business needs
- Non-exempt
- Monday through Friday
Travel:
- Occasional travel to work functions
