What are the responsibilities and job description for the Reading Plus Instructor position at Urban Ventures?
Reading Plus teachers will provide steady, systematic, multi-sensory literacy instruction to students who need support that goes beyond their classroom instruction. This targeted instruction will take place in a one on one, small group, summer and afterschool settings.
The Reading Plus instructor helps students receive literacy support to stay on track in school. Support is provided in both English and Spanish. The program also focuses on developing character and healthy peer relationships.
Responsibilities:
- Plan and teach steady, systematic, multi-sensory lessons using the Orton Gillingham reading approach
- Get trained and certified in Orton Gillingham through The Reading Center
- Training provided and funded
- Regularly assess student progress and record data in a timely, organized fashion
- Build positive relationships with students, partner school staff and families, including but not limited to regular updates regarding student progress
- Meet weekly with the Reading Plus Director to reflect and collaborate
- Attend regular on-site and off-site literacy trainings
- Help plan and execute bi-annual community events for Reading Plus families
- Teach summer literacy classes and/or participate in summer tutoring
Supervisory Responsibilities:
- None
Required Skills/Abilities:
- Willingness to go above and beyond in forming relationships with students and families
- Bilingual Reading Instructor
- Has the ability to speak, read, and write in English and Spanish
Additional eligibility qualifications:
- Experience with child ages PreK-6th
Education and Experience:
- Minimum BA/BS in Education preferred
- Experience effectively working in a multi-ethnic, multi-racial urban community
Physical and Environmental Requirements:
- While performing the duties of this job, the employee may be regularly required to stand, sit, talk, hear, reach, stoop, kneel, and use hands and fingers to operate a computer, telephone, and keyboard
- Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision requirements due to computer work
- Light to moderate lifting may be required
- Regular, predictable attendance is required
Work Location
- Urban Ventures Campus based at 2924 Fourth Ave South, Minneapolis
- Travel to schools, must have reliable transportation
Work hours:
- Full-time, 36 hours per week
- Non-exempt

- Occasional travel to work functions
- Frequent travel to partner school
