The Expanded Functions Dental Assistant (EFDA) is responsible for supporting dental care delivery by preparing treatment areas, assisting with procedures, and ensuring compliance with the Indiana Dental Practice Act, Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA), and all applicable state and federal regulations.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Core responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

Clinical Responsibilities:

  • Place, condense, and finish amalgam and composite restorations in accordance with Indiana law.
  • Operate and maintain X-ray equipment in compliance with radiation safety standards.
  • Prepare treatment rooms by following prescribed procedures and infection control protocols.
  • Assist dentists by providing instruments, suctioning, and passing materials.
  • Select, mix, and place dental materials.
  • Take diagnostic impressions, pour and trim models, and prepare study casts.
  • Fabricate temporary restorations and clean/polish removable appliances.
  • Manage dental and medical emergencies by maintaining CPR certification and emergency preparedness.
  • Educate patients on oral hygiene, post-operative care, and plaque control.
  • Maintain detailed and accurate patient records.

Compliance and Safety Responsibilities:

  • Adhere to HIPAA regulations, ensuring patient confidentiality and data protection.
  • Follow all infection control protocols, sterilization processes, and safety procedures.
  • Maintain and troubleshoot dental equipment, coordinating repairs when necessary.
  • Manage dental supply inventory and ensure availability of necessary materials.

  • Stay updated on industry best practices through continuing education.
  • Participate in team meetings and off-site marketing activities.
  • Contribute to a positive, patient-focused work environment.

ATTENDANCE & PUNCTUALITY:

  • Maintain reliable attendance and punctuality.
  • Adhere to assigned work schedules and complete assignments on time.

Education & Experience:

  • Completion of an ADA-accredited dental assisting program or equivalent on-the-job training.
  • Minimum of one year of related dental assisting experience preferred.

Licenses & Certifications:

  • Active Indiana Dental Radiographer License.
  • Certified Dental Assistant (CDA) certification preferred.
  • Expanded Functions Dental Assistant (EFDA) certification required.
  • Current Basic Life Support (BLS)/CPR certification.

Technical & Soft Skills:

  • Proficiency in dental software (e.g., Open Dental preferred) and Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills for patient interactions.
  • Ability to multitask and work efficiently in a fast-paced environment.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Ability to stand and walk for extended periods.
  • Frequent use of hands for handling instruments and assisting procedures.
  • Ability to lift and move up to 50 lbs.
  • Good vision and manual dexterity required for precise dental procedures.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

  • Exposure to dental materials, chemicals, and bodily fluids.
  • Moderate noise level with occasional high-speed dental equipment use.
  • Compliance with all safety regulations, including radiation protection and infection control measures.
