The Medical Technologist is responsible for the performance of all duties relating to processes in the Urology Pathology Lab. The position is task and detail oriented, and a combination of technical specimen preparation and laboratory reporting. The ability to provide documentation in electronic format is required.
Essential Job Function/Competencies
Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
- Follows and establishes procedures for preparation for urine culture, urine cytology, microscopic urinalysis, PSA, and Testosterone Lab Tests.
- Prepares and scans pathology/lab reports generated by the pathology department.
- Identifies and reports discrepancies in patient information or results.
- Data entry into electronic and paper reporting forms as established by Advanced Urology Associates.
- Monitors and audits the EMR system for lab results not reported.
- Reports / discrepancies and specimens/test results that are not available.
- Quality Control: daily / weekly / monthly review; determination of control ranges, mean, SD and CV including documentation of performance, evaluation for shifts and trends and documentation of failures.
- Quality Assurance: establish and maintain a pertinent quality assurance program to track processes in pre-analytic, analytic and post-analytic lab phases. Documentation and review of results at least every 6 months.
- Proficiency Testing: enrollment and participation in an accredited proficiency testing program ensuring routine handling of all PT materials, documentation of results and follow up of any PT failures including documented corrective action.
- Preventative Maintenance: responsible for the care and maintenance of all laboratory instrumentation to ensure reliable performance and rapid identification of failure; documentation of temperatures, cleaning, calibration, and repairs.
- Performs all procedures designated under CLIA’88 rules as moderate or highly complex testing; knows all responsibilities as outlined in the laboratory procedure manual necessary to perform these procedures with highest level of quality within turnaround time goals set by the laboratory.
- Practices the proficient and safe use of all equipment necessary for the completion of all duties and responsibilities by following all maintenance, safety and quality controls policies and procedures.
- Prepares and maintains adequate stock of reagents, standards, and control materials for the performance of testing at assigned workstation and notifies supervisor of any shortages or problems.
- Analyzes all test and quality control results for errors, inconsistencies and deviations prior to reporting results. Initiates and documents troubleshooting and problem solving to resolve issues.
- Reports all test results in the laboratory information system according to laboratory policies and procedures, within stated turn-around times, and follows appropriate backup procedures during computer downtimes.
- Communicates any pertinent information or problems with laboratory staff and supervisors in a respectful and proactive manner.
- Enters appropriate secondary CPT codes for additional lab tests performed.
- Answers inquiries regarding specimen handling, results and other technical information.
- Provides validation for any new lab collection or tests the physicians incorporate into patient treatment plans and care paths.
- Performs other position related duties as assigned.
- Must satisfy CLIA ‘88 qualification requirements for testing personnel performing high complexity testing.
- Certification or eligibility as medical technologist (MT).
- ASCP Certification.
- BLS certification required, ACLS preferred.
- Licensure and certifications as required by State.
- Knowledge and ability to use automated and conventional laboratory equipment and laboratory testing methodologies.
- Knowledge and ability to use laboratory/hospitals information systems.
- Exceptional organizational ability, with attention to detail mandatory.
- Provide for documentation electronic environment following established protocols.
- Knowledge in healthcare systems operations such as EMR.
- Knowledge of medical terminology.

- Reports/documents unexpected occurrences involving specimens and reports as appropriate.

- Maintains operations by following policies and procedures; reporting needed changes.
