What are the responsibilities and job description for the 17B - Cyber Electromagnetic Warfare Officer position at US Army Cyber School?

The Cyber Electromagnetic Warfare Officer receives approximately three months of specialized training focused in the following areas:

  • Electronics Theory
  • Communications and Electromagnetic Spectrum-Based Attacks
  • Electromagnetic Attack, Support, and Protection
  • CEMA Support to Operations
  • EW Ground Operations

Prerequisites: TS/SCI; Branched Cyber and selected for 17B; Successful completion of Cyber BOLC or Cyber Warfare Officers Course

What does a typical day look like for a Cyber and Electromagnetic Warfare Officer?

  • Lead, direct, manage, plan, integrate, synchronize, and/or execute cyberspace and electronic warfare operations at brigade, division, corps, Army, and JIM levels.
  • Plan, integrate, and synchronize cyberspace and Electronic Warfare operations with other lethal and nonlethal actions to enable commanders to mass effects and gain advantages in the cyberspace domain, electromagnetic spectrum, and across other domains during MDO in support of unified land operations.
  • Utilize personnel, resources, and capabilities to engage adversaries in and through cyberspace and the electromagnetic spectrum to effect or attack personnel, facilities, networks, or equipment with the intent of degrading, neutralizing, or destroying enemy combat capabilities.
  • Protect friendly personnel, facilities, networks, and equipment from cyberspace or electronic attack, as well as friendly or enemy use of the electromagnetic spectrum that could degrade, neutralize, or destroy friendly combat capabilities.
  • Search for, intercept, identify, and locate or localize adversary electromagnetic vulnerabilities to enable future operations.
  • Command, lead, direct, and manage cyberspace electromagnetic activities, cyber, and electronic warfare units, and organizations.

What qualifications are you looking for?

  • Well-versed in tactics, techniques, and procedures for performing cyberspace operations and electromagnetic spectrum operations to deliver cyberspace effects and conduct electronic warfare missions, including electronic attack, electronic protection, and electronic warfare support.
  • Understand friendly and adversary cyberspace and electromagnetic spectrum capabilities, objectives, organizations, and/or operations, as well as the broader aspects of MDO and unified land operations.
  • Must be a U.S. citizen.
  • Must obtain and maintain a TOP SECRET clearance.
  • Must receive a favorable special background investigation with eligibility for sensitive compartmented information.
  • Must be able to pass a counter-intelligence scope polygraph (unit/assignment based).
  • Bachelor's of Science or higher degree in specific STEM disciplines preferred, but not required.
  • Must successfully complete the Cyber Branch Assessment and Selection Process, which includes but is not limited to an interview, aptitude assessment, written questionnaire, and supporting documents packet review.
  • Officers must be AOC 17A qualified prior to being awarded AOC 17B qualification unless granted an exception to policy waiver by the Commandant, U.S. Army Cyber School, Fort Gordon, GA.
