Job Description: Ophthalmic Assistant

Job Summary
The Ophthalmic Assistant will work under the supervision of an ophthalmologist or optometrist to provide patient care by performing various clinical and administrative tasks. The assistant will be responsible for preparing patients for eye exams, performing diagnostic tests, and assisting with minor surgical procedures. The assistant will also be responsible for maintaining patient records and ensuring that equipment is properly maintained and sterilized.
Key Responsibilities
- Prepare patients for eye exams by taking medical histories and performing preliminary tests such as visual acuity, color vision, and depth perception tests
- Assist with minor surgical procedures such as removing foreign objects from the eye or administering eye drops
- Perform diagnostic tests such as tonometry, visual field testing, and retinal imaging
- Maintain patient records by documenting exam results, medical histories, and treatment plans
- Clean and sterilize equipment and instruments
- Order and maintain inventory of supplies and medications
- Assist with administrative tasks such as scheduling appointments and answering phones
Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent
- Completion of an accredited ophthalmic assistant program or equivalent work experience
- Knowledge of ophthalmic terminology, anatomy, and physiology
- Ability to perform diagnostic tests and assist with minor surgical procedures
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team
- Strong attention to detail and organizational skills
- Ability to maintain confidentiality of patient information
