Plant Operations Tech
Air Products and Chemicals, Inc. (NYSE:APD), a World-Class manufacturer of Industrial Gases, is seeking and Operations Technician at its Joliet, IL facility.
The Operator Technician is responsible for the safe and reliable operation of the Steam Methane Reformer (SMR) in the production of Hydrogen (H2) and Steam for the on-site customer. Operations Technicians will work alongside the Operations team, Maintenance Technicians, Instrument Technicians, Site Leadership and other support personnel to ensure successful operation.

Responsibilities:
The Operator Technician is responsible for the safe and reliable operation of the Steam Methane Reformer (SMR) in the production of Hydrogen (H2) and Steam for the on-site customer. Operations Technicians will work alongside the Operations team, Maintenance Technicians, Instrument Technicians, Site Leadership and other support personnel to ensure successful operation.
Plant Operator responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following activities:
- Commitment to Air Products safety culture and Basic Safety Process (BSP) program
- Commitment to Operational Discipline and 4-S culture
- Work rotating 12-hour shift schedule
- Monitor and control plant process conditions by adjusting Pumps, Valves, Machinery and Electrical Systems.
- Interface with highly automated DCS control system
- Communicate with customer in a professional manner
- Perform water chemistry testing (Steam, Boiler & Cooling Water)
- Perform minor/routine preventative maintenance tasks and inspections
- Perform process field readings/logs each shift
- Follow safe work practices (SWIM’s, JSA’s)
- Perform equipment isolations and prepare equipment for maintenance activities
- Read/Understand P&ID drawings
- Assist in troubleshooting and problem solving as necessary
- Monitor contractor activities for BSP compliance
- Support internal/external inspections and audits as necessary
- Support plant outages and large maintenance activities
- Safe operation of mobile equipment
- This is a safety sensitive position.
Qualifications/Requirements
- High School diploma or equivalent
- Minimum of 5 years of experience in manufacturing (Refining, Chemical plant, Industrial gas plant, or an operation of equivalent complexity)
- Basic computer proficiency and software knowledge (Word, Excel, Outlook)
- Physical Requirements:
- Perform work in all weather conditions
- Climb ladders
- Perform elevated work
Work Hours
Ability to work a rotating 12-hour shift, including nights and weekends, respond to call-out situations.
