Responsibilities

The USA Health Children's and Women's Hospital Laboratory Director has the overall responsibility for the planning, coordination, evaluation, and supervision of all technical and/or operational activities in the Childfren's and Women's managed laboratory sections. The Laboratory Director will be responsible, in coordination with Medical Director(s), for continual accreditation of the laboratories by regulatory agencies.  Individual must possess the ability to drive high quality results in a safe working environment.  Individual must value integrity and operate the laboratories in an efficient, economical and businesslike manner.

 

Plans, assigns, and directs work in the laboratory sections, which include (but may change): chemistry, microbiology, hematology, flow cytometry, blood bank laboratories, cancer center satellite labs, MDC physician office lab and outreach lab; serves as liaison with other areas as needed; specifically serves as liaison between technical staff and Medical Director(s) of the laboratories; helps ensure that all applicable procedures are followed; mentors and supports direct reports, i.e. supervisors, in their responsibilities and functions, ensuring they receive training in supervisory skill development; identifies and implements training programs as necessary; mentors and supports all staff within department; defines, coordinates, and monitors Quality Assurance and Safety Programs. Ensures quality control and compliance procedures are followed and QC reports are up to date; oversees plans and preparations for inspections, internal and external; oversees staffing of all personnel in the laboratories; effectively maintains quality staffing by interviewing, hiring, training and providing staff development through performance evaluation and corrective counseling; identifies future needs in terms of staff, equipment, and facilities; submits appropriate documentation for procurement of such; reviews test performance, drives process and project management, and prepares and submits required reports to meet established deadlines; manages test database; ensures departmental standard operating procedures and database accurately reflects the current process; develops annual budget and manages department costs and resources to adhere to budget; resolves problems through interaction with clients via phone calls or other means of communication; ensures compliance with all local, federal, CLIA, and CAP regulations; performs other duties as assigned by leadership or as business needs dictate; participates in Performance Improvement activities as assigned; regular and prompt attendance; ability to work schedule as defined and overtime as required; related duties as required.

Qualifications

Bachelor's degree from an institution as approved and accepted by the University of South Alabama and seven years of progressively responsible experience as a Medical Technologist, four of which were in management or in a supervisory capacity. Current registry with ASCP as a Medical Technologist or Medical Laboratory Scientist is required. Experience as a laboratory director preferred.
