Responsibilities
Checks daily reports as needed; maintains a timely and accurate flow of receiving documents with Accounts Payable; maintains proper records for all medications and controlled substances dispensed or received; maintains accurate and complete records; produces and reviews timely reports from automation systems; utilizes the correct documentation tools and procedures for all pharmacy functions; disseminates information related to pharmacy automation and technology in a timely manner; interacts with vendors; collaborates with the department of Information Technology to develop, improve and maintain operational pharmacy programs; communicates and uses appropriate customer relation skills with physicians, patients, families and healthcare team in-person and via telephone; maintains relationships with other hospitals; promotes effective communication concerning medication use applications; maintains inventory; alerts operations of any backorders; maintains drug shortage reports; assists the Informatics Team in developing, testing and maintaining clinical, financial, and operational information; assists in charge entry and auditing; investigates charge anomalies; coordinates the procurement and maintenance of inventories for both medications and non-drug supplies (labels, prescription pads, etc.); generates and analyzes purchasing and inventory reports; monitors/manages drug shortages, outdates, and recalls; uses all means available to acquire items in short supply; participates in functional testing for human factor issues before and after system upgrades and improvements when appropriate; performs special projects and other work as assigned by supervisor; prepares and secures authorizations to purchase stock supplies using Mediclick; processes ordering and receiving documents accurately and timely; resolves billing problems with Accounts Payable; restocks all work areas by transfer of stock or filling of appropriate carts/drawers to include emergency stock; utilizes the Cardinal Purchasing System to generate and analyze reports and verify invoices and match orders; uses aseptic technique to compound small volume and large volume IVs and calculates and measures doses; evaluates and tests system code changes in conjunction with the Information Technology Department; assists in maintaining an analysis of top drugs and the cost paid for each drug to be reviewed quarterly as it relates to the Charge Description Master (CDM); assists in maintaining an up to date CDM database; requests CDMs for new products or changes; works with outside companies to understand potential savings and purchasing strategies; assists in managing a variety of contracts; maintains knowledge of the Reimbursement Fee Schedules and works with department manager to adjust CDM charges to maximize reimbursement for top volume drugs; maintains knowledge of drug conversion factors for both billing and reimbursement; performs all tasks necessary to prepare and deliver medications using a variety of transport mechanisms under the direction of a pharmacist: fills stat medication orders, prepares medication carts for distribution, prepares IV solutions; delivers narcotics; restocks all work areas; assists in training and orientation of lower level technicians; assists in the development of a formal training program based on department competency standards and goals that will facilitate technicians obtaining national certification; responsible for departmental Quality Assurance; supports the pharmacoeconomic efforts of the pharmacy and hospital; provides on-going training for staff on the Automix Parenteral Nutrition Processor; maintains Quality Assurance, Infection Control and safety data; maintains and operates equipment; reports broken or malfunctioning equipment; maintains current and adequate medication and supplies; accesses patient information utilizing the pharmacy computer system and the Hospital Information System; abides by and enforces all compliance requirements and policies and performs these responsibilities in an ethical manner; adheres to hospital policies including confidentiality; performs essential functions safely with minimal supervision; adheres to current Infection Control and Safety requirements; accesses and accurately maintains electronic and paper medical records; regular and prompt attendance; ability to work schedule as defined and overtime as required; related duties as required.
Qualifications
High school diploma or equivalent, two years Pharmacy Technician or directly related experience and registry with the Alabama State Board of Pharmacy as a Pharmacy Technician. Experience utilizing Microsoft Excel is required. Higher education is preferred
