Responsibilities
Administers anesthetics to render patients insensible to pain during surgical, obstetrical, and other medical procedures; examines patient to determine degree of surgical risk, and type of anesthetic and sedation to administer, and discusses findings with medical practitioner concerned with case; records type and amount of anesthetic and sedation administered and condition of patients before, during and after anesthetic; monitors the vital signs of the patient during surgery or medical procedure and carries out the necessary adjustments accordingly; monitors the patient through the initial recovery stage and administers drugs and medications that are essential during recovery; helps in pain management, to patients suffering from chronic pain such as respiratory and neurological illnesses; may instruct medical students and other personnel in characteristics and methods of administering various types of anesthetics, signs and symptoms of reactions and complications, and emergency measures to employ; positions the patient on the operating table to provide maximum comfort and providing surgical accessibility to both the patient and the surgeon; provides and maintains life support and airway management during an emergency; prepares a patient before an emergency surgery; coordinates and directs work of nurses, medical technicians and other healthcare providers; schedules and maintains use of surgical suite, including operating, wash-up, waiting rooms, and anesthetic and sterilizing equipment; conducts medical research to aid in controlling and curing disease, to investigate new medications, and to develop and test new medical techniques; communicates and uses appropriate customer relation skills with patients, families and healthcare team in person and via telephone; adheres to all hospital policies, including those regarding confidentiality; responds to overhead pages; regular and prompt attendance; ability to work schedule as defined and additional hours and call as required; related duties as required.
Qualifications
Graduation from an accredited medical school with a MD or DO degree, licensure with the state of Alabama as a MD or DO, board certification eligible in clinical field of study, current DEA registration and current State of Alabama Controlled Substance Certificate, and eligible for USA Hospitals staff privileges.
