Responsibilities
This is responsible technical work performing a variety of tasks assisting with and facilitating the overall workflow in the Histology lab while obtaining preliminary Histotechnologist HTL (ASCP) training; performs and documents equipment preventative maintenance and quality control including stain changed, temperature checks, and chemical disposals; conduct quality control of lab procedures and performs tasks in accordance to established standards; monitors inventory and follows notification protocols for supply orders; restocking new supplies; processing and embedding tissue samples in paraffin wax; sectioning paraffin blocks using a microtome; preparing frozen sections using a cryostat; performing routine histologic, cytochemical, immunohistochemical, and special stains; performs duties related to electron microscopy and immunofluorescence; performs registration and accessioning of specimens; work is performed under the general supervision of a higher level professional position and is reviewed for results obtained; regular and prompt attendance is required; ability to work schedule as defined and overtime as required; performs related duties as required.
Qualifications
Associate's degree in a physical or natural science from an accredited institution as approved and accepted by the University of South Alabama. Certification with the American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP) as a Histotechnician HT and experience in a histology lab are highly preferred.
