Responsibilities

Surgical technologists are allied health professionals, who are an integral part of the team of medical practitioners providing surgical care to patients. The Surgical Technologist Trainee participates in the formal education program to train for the role of a Surgical Technologist in the Operating Room (OR) or surgical environment. The program prepares students to assist with procedures in the operating room, under the supervision of surgeons, registered nurses, surgical assistants, or other surgical personnel. The Surgical Technologist role assists with preparation of the operating room suite, maintains an aseptic environment, prepares and transports patients for surgery, adjust lights and equipment, pass instruments and other supplies to surgeons and surgeon’s assistants, hold retractors, cut sutures, and participate in counts of sponges, needles, supplies and instruments. The Surgical Technologists program prepares students to be experts in the theory and application of the principles of asepsis and sterile technique and combining the knowledge of human anatomy, surgical procedures, and implementation of tools and technologies to facilitate a physician’s performance of invasive therapeutic and diagnostic procedures.

Responsibilities for Surgical Technologist Trainee include ability to understand and follow instructions, active class participation, functions as a team member; completes all course assignments as instructed and maintaining an 80 average; attends class regularly as outlined in the student handbook; follows the schools policies and procedures outlined in the student handbook; prepares equipment and supplies for use during the procedure; determines OR suite readiness and adequate supplies for case; scrubs, gowns, and gloves self and other team members for the procedures, prepare sterile tables and instruments, utilizing proper aseptic technique; prepares instruments and supplies on sterile field in a timely manner; passes instruments accurately during procedure; provides for patient safety by actively participating in the intraoperative timeout; counts sponges, needles and instruments with RN Circulator according to established procedures; labels all solutions/medications as they are passed to the sterile field; handles instruments and supplies correctly and ensures proper functioning; collects and maintains specimens, and assures proper identification by the circulating nurse and physician; utilizes correct body mechanics in moving, transporting, and positioning patients, stretchers, and/or tables in order to prevent injury to patient and personnel; anticipates the surgeon’s needs and request additional items from RN Circulator in sufficient time for surgical teams use; utilizes physician preference cards in preparing for specific operative procedures and update after each case; utilizes principles of universal precautions during surgical procedures; assists with between case clean-up and proceed with preparation for the next case, restocks supplies and equipment after surgical procedures; performs second assistant duties as outlined by USA Health Academy policy; performs instrumentation reprocessing and sterilization procedures; demonstrates accountability evidenced by knowledge of current changes in practices, new equipment, and quality initiatives; regular and prompt attendance; ability to work the schedule as defined and overtime and call as required; related duties as required.

Qualifications

High school diploma or equivalent.
