Responsibilities

This is a pharmacy support role in which an individual performs pharmacy functions under the direct supervision of a licensed pharmacist. Work is reviewed for accuracy and compliance with regulations, policies, and procedures.

An employee in this position is responsible for:

 

• Supervising technicians and performing specialty functions as assigned, including but not limited to: Scheduling coverage of department needs, including daily staff assignments; performing training, coaching, and evaluations of technicians; ensuring completion of unit inspections and expiration date tracking; interviewing potential candidates; communicating with pharmacy leadership to manage department needs; communicating with pharmacy IT team to manage department needs; managing inventory of medications, including narcotics, through the functions of receiving, returning, repackaging, expiring and reordering; preparing and/or delivering medications, including narcotics, restock lists for automated dispensing cabinets; ccmmunicating with pharmacy audit team to resolve discrepancies as needed; managing inventory trays, kits and crash carts; assisting in training new hires in all tasks, including sterile and non-sterile compounding; assisting Sterile Compounding Compliance Manager as needed.

• Abiding by and enforcing all compliance requirements and policies, and performing these responsibilities in an ethical manner consistent with the organization’s values

• Adhering to hospital policies including confidentiality and dress code
• Participating in patient experience programs
• Utilizing proper body mechanics when moving equipment and supplies necessary to perform essential functions
• Maintaining equipment, and reporting broken or malfunctioning equipment
• Maintaining current and adequate medications and supplies
• Utilizing a computer to access the hospital information system and the pharmacy purchasing system
• Performing all tasks necessary to prepare and deliver medications using a variety of transport mechanisms
• Restocking all work areas by transfer of stock or filling of appropriate carts and drawers, including emergency stock
• Reordering medications and supplies as required
• Assisting in training and orientation of staff
• Utilizing aseptic technique to compound small volume and large volume IV’s, with the ability to calculate and measure accurate doses
• Preparing unit dose medications and non-sterile compounds for distribution
• Assisting the pharmacists in the performance of pharmaceutical care activities
• Communicating and using appropriate customer relation skills with physicians, patients, families, and healthcare team members in person and via telephone and email
• Responding to overhead pages
• Maintaining accurate and complete records by utilizing the correct tools and procedures for all pharmacy functions
• Maintaining proper records for all medications and controlled substances dispensed or received
• Completing all departmental and hospital education requirements
• Utilizing cost effective practices in performing job functions
• Adhering to contract purchasing agreements as appropriate
• Adhering to current infection control and safety standards
• Participating in performance improvement activities through quality measurement or participation in improvement processes as assigned
• Accessing and accurately maintaining electronic and paper medical records
• Performing all essential job functions assigned to Pharmacy Technician I, II, and III
• Monitoring outdated products and processes returns for prompt credit and disposal
• Regular and prompt attendance
• Accepting and completing all duties positively and without conflict
• The ability to working schedules as defined and overtime as required
• Related duties as required

 

To be successful in this role, a pharmacy technician must demonstrate the following skills:


• The ability to think critically, applying knowledge gained through education and experience to address real world pharmacy challenges
• The ability to keep up to date with advances and practice changes affecting our profession and our patient population
• Basic math skills used in the calculation of doses, drug product dilutions, and other problems related to the procurement, preparation, and dispensing of medications
• Time management skills that allow the pharmacy technician to triage multiple competing responsibilities and prioritize them in the best interest of patient care
• Familiarity with the applicable regulations, rules, laws, statutes, guidelines, policies, etc. (local, state, and federal) that impact the practice of pharmacy in the hospital setting
• The ability to work on multidisciplinary teams to achieve desired results
• Effective and proactive verbal and written communication
• The ability to engender trust from pharmacists and other members of the care team

• Pharmacy technicians will use their knowledge, skills, and abilities to assure good pharmacy practice within the department, good service to our patients, and support for non-pharmacy colleagues, even for contingencies not specifically addressed in these guidelines.

 


Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent

• Four Years Pharmacy Technician or directly related experience.
• Registration with the Alabama State Board of Pharmacy (ALBOP) as a Pharmacy Technician
• Completion of an ALBOP approved technician training course within six months of registration per ALBOP requirements
• Completion of sterile compounding training with USA Health within 6 months of employment
• Nationally certified pharmacy technician with the PTCB (Pharmacy Technician Certification Board) or NHA (National Healthcare Association)
• Hospital experience is preferred
• Supervisor experience preferred
