Responsibilities
MOBILE, ALABAMA (USA). The Department of Pathology at the University of South Alabama (USA) in Mobile is currently recruiting for a fellow-attending in surgical pathology at the Clinical Instructor level. The surgical pathology fellowship program at USA offers comprehensive training in diagnostic surgical pathology in the setting of busy academic hospitals. The surgical pathology fellow spends six months working on a
concentrated/specialized surgical pathology with appropriate instruction provide by our senior faculty. After six months, the fellow will act as a junior attending pathologist and during this time, the fellow assumes sign-out responsibility for a large number of surgical cases and covers the intraoperative consultation/frozen section service on a rotating basis. The fellow is involved in several intra and interdepartmental conferences, including tumor board and a consensus conference for difficult and/or interesting surgical cases. The fellow also participates in the quality assurance and administrative activities of the department. Participation in the teaching of medical students and pathology residents is an intrinsic part of the fellowship, and research activities are encouraged. Alabama license is required. The Department of Pathology serves USA Health University Hospital, USA Health Children's and Women's Hospital, USA Health Mitchell Cancer Institute, USA Health Strada Patient Care Center, a free-standing ED and multiple clinics throughout the greater Mobile area. USA Health University Hospital is a Level I Trauma Center.
The Division of Anatomic Pathology handles about 17,000 surgical and 4,500 cytology cases a year and it is expanding rapidly. Molecular/next generation sequencing, immunohistochemistry, and electron microscopy laboratories are part of the sophisticated menu of tests available. The Department has a combined residency training program in Anatomic and Clinical Pathology with 12 residents and a fellowship training program.
