Position Title: Custodian of Schools

Summary: The head custodian provides a safe, attractive, comfortable, and clean environment to ensure full and productive use of district facilities. To accomplish these tasks the head custodian must work closely with the staff and administration of each attendance center.
Supervisory Responsibility: NONE
Qualifications/Education:
- High School diploma or equivalent
- Thorough knowledge of maintenance methods, hazardous and non-hazardous materials and equipment.
- Completion of Housekeeping I and II course work during the first year of employment.
- Ability to make minor repairs of equipment such as plumbing and electrical needs.
- Ability to work independently without supervision.
- Certification of Health for School Personnel K.S.A. 72-5213
- Current Driver’s License (Kansas Preferred)
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Provide a safe, attractive, comfortable, and clean environment to ensure full and productive use of district facilities.
- Ensure that all duties are conducted according to district guidelines.
- Maintain confidentiality.
- Appropriately operate and maintain all equipment and machinery as required.
- Communicate effectively with students and staff.

General Responsibilities:
- Grounds Maintenance:
- Keep building and premises (including sidewalks, driveways, and play areas) neat and clean at all times.
- Shovel, plow and sand sidewalks, driveways, parking areas and steps as appropriate.
- Raise the United States flag at or before 8:00 A.M. on each school day and lower it at or after 3:30 P.M.
- Keep the grounds free from rubbish.
- Perform such yard keeping chores as grass cutting, tree trimming, and the like, as necessary to maintain the school grounds in a safe and attractive condition.
- Comply with local laws and procedures for the storage and disposal of trash, rubbish and waste.
- Building Maintenance:
- Regulate heat, ventilation and air conditioning systems to provide temperatures appropriate to the season and insure economical usage of fuel, water and electricity.
- Check daily to insure that all exit doors re-open and all panic bolts are working properly during the hours of building occupancy.
- Complete minor building repairs.
- Report major repairs needed promptly to the building principal.
- Immediately report to the principal any damage or unsafe conditions to school property.
- Conduct an ongoing program of general maintenance, upkeep and repair.
- Work at school and community activities held in the building as directed by the principal.
- Check emergency lights and fire extinguishers, fill in date and initial the tag.
- Housekeeping:
- Sweep classrooms and dust furniture daily.
- Clean corridors after each school day and during the day when needed.
- Scrub, hose down and disinfect toilet floors daily and clean all sanitary fixtures and drinking fountains daily.
- Wash all windows on both inside and outside at least twice each year and more frequently if necessary.
- Keep all floors in a clean and attractive condition and in a good state of preservation.
- Assume responsibility for the opening and closing of the building each school day and for determining, before leaving, that all doors and windows are secured, and all lights, except those left on for safety reasons, are turned off.
- Maintain an inventory of supplies, equipment and fuel on hand, and requisition such needed replacements from the principal far enough in advance so they may be delivered in such time, as it will not hinder the completion of custodial duties.
- Human Relations:
- Interact in a tactful and courteous manner with students, teachers and building visitors.
- Immediately report unauthorized persons to the principal.
- Miscellaneous:
- Attend custodial workshops as determined by the building principal.
- Adhere to all regulations and directions involving asbestos and use of hazardous materials.
- Adhere to all district health and safety policies, including all precautions of the Blood borne Pathogens Exposure Control Plan.
- Maintain professional confidentiality in all areas.
- Perform other duties as assigned by the principal.
**Head High School Custodian:
- Works with building administration to provide building and grounds services as needed.
- Works with and directly supervises the senior high building custodians.
- Refers necessary work to the district maintenance or bus barn personnel.
- Examines the school building on a regular basis for needed repairs and maintenance.
- Monitors the inventory of custodial supplies.
- Monitors the inventory of custodial supplies.
- Works with the building administration to develop a long and short range schedule for building and ground maintenance.
- Monitors fire extinguisher schedule.
- Strives constantly to promote the safety, health and comfort of the students and employees in the high school.
- Demonstrates use of equipment and material to custodial staff.
Physical Requirements/Environmental Conditions:
- Requires prolonged standing, sitting and use of equipment including repetitive motions and computer eye fatigue
- Requires stooping, bending and reaching and lifting occasionally up to 100lbs
- Must work in stressful environment depending on outside variables with numerous interruptions
