Basic Requirements
Education: Undergraduate and Graduate Education: Major study in illustrative design, commercial art, fine arts, industrial design, architecture, drafting, interior design, appropriate history or scientific subjects, visual communication, or other fields related to the position. Some positions may also require subject-matter knowledge of medicine, science, or technical equipment.

Experience
Specialized Experience (for positions above GS-5): Experience in the actual type of work for which application is made. Unpaid experience is creditable, provided the work done was of a quality level and demonstrated the ability required for the position. This includes preparation of graphic presentations of objects, facts, or ideas requiring the use of art media and artistic ability. Appropriate experience may have been gained working as a commercial artist or illustrator in the fields of public information, advertising, or publishing; or by working with technical or scientific equipment, or entomological, biological, medical, or other similar material.

In addition to meeting the basic requirements described above, applicants must also meet additional qualification requirements as stated below.

Specialized Experience: Specialized experience is experience directly related to the position to be filled. Specialized experience must be described for each grade level advertised. The specialized experience requirements for this position are: Qualifying experience for GS-9 includes one year of specialized experience comparable to GS-7 which is directly related to the work of this position, and which has equipped the applicant with the knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the duties of the position. For this position, specialized experience includes experience developing original designs for outreach activities or social media; creating flyers, presentations, or promotional videos; and utilizing graphic design editing software to create or prepare visual materials (e.g. photographs, illustrations, charts, drawings, artwork) for a company.
OR
Education: successful completion of a master's or equivalent graduate degree or 2 full years of progressively higher-level graduate education leading to such a degree or LL.B. or J.D., if related. Related degrees include graphic design, communications, visual communications, scientific photography, or marketing.
OR
Combination of education and experience as described above.

Specialized Experience: Specialized experience is experience directly related to the position to be filled. Specialized experience must be described for each grade level advertised. The specialized experience requirements for this position are: Qualifying experience for GS-11 includes one year of specialized experience comparable to GS-9 which is directly related to the work of this position, and which has equipped the applicant with the knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the duties of the position. For this position, specialized experience includes experience recommending new strategies for improving visual communications; preparing or presenting promotional videos or campaigns; designing the placement and appearance of visual materials; and utilizing software packages to produce electronic output for publications.
OR
Education: successful completion of a PhD or equivalent doctoral degree or 3 full years of progressively higher-level graduate education leading to such a degree or LL.M, if related. Related degrees include graphic design, communications, visual communications, scientific photography, or marketing.
OR
Combination of education and experience as described above.
Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
