What are the responsibilities and job description for the Actuary position at USLI?
Work with Underwriting, Claims and/or Inspections to develop action plans to improve profitability for poor performing products and better position ourselves for profitable growth for profitable products. Independently develop rate indications using appropriate actuarial techniques, and modify and interpret those indications in the face of changing business conditions over the experience period. Critically challenge the assumptions underlying a rate indication and provide alternative approaches as appropriate. Develop rate plans for new products and coverages including review of coverage forms and endorsements to determine if related rating adjustments are needed. Work with IT to determine how best to implement coverage rating structures. Suggest proactive ways to remain healthy and competitive, or address problem areas, working with Underwriting on implementing related solutions. Develop creative yet actuarially sound solutions to situations where we are challenged to achieve regulatory approval. Work with other departments and/or outside vendors to achieve regulatory approvals when necessary. Be aware of industry trends on an ongoing basis and how they might impact USLI. Demonstrate full ownership of assigned projects. Serve as Business Partner to an assigned Underwriting team, keeping current on their underwriting and business activities and maintaining strong communications/relationship.
Strong and effective communicator with senior management and with other members of own team and community. Ability to identify, understand and resolve business problems independently, while ensuring that all relevant functional perspectives are considered (e.g., Underwriting, Accounting, Claims, etc). Also able to translate community goals to appropriate action at team level. Can break down a project into components and coordinate the work done across the various functions to completion. Able to gather and document in a clear and concise manner relevant information from other areas of USLI in resolving an issue. Able to obtain standard data using SQL queries and scope out more complex data requests. Proficient in using Microsoft Office suite of products.
Education: College degree majoring in mathematics, statistics, actuarial science, or a related field
Actuarial Exams or Equivalent: At least 6 actuarial exams
Experience: At least 7 years of property/casualty actuarial experience
