What are the responsibilities and job description for the Claims Examiner-Liability Claims position at USLI?
Essential Functions:
- Coverage Verification: Review the first notice of loss and policy details to confirm coverage.
- Claim Investigation: Conduct a thorough and targeted investigation to evaluate liability and damages, applying statutory and case law to assess exposure.
- Liability Assessment: Identify joint tortfeasors and ensure equitable cost-sharing among responsible parties.
- Reserve Management: Establish and maintain appropriate reserves as the claim progresses to accurately reflect potential exposure based on liability and damage evaluation.
- Claim Resolution: Proactively manage claim files, maintain an effective diary system, negotiate settlements directly with claimants or their attorneys, and oversee defense counsel to ensure litigation aligns with company guidelines. Review and approve settlement agreements.
- Documentation & Reporting: Maintain detailed claim notes reflecting all relevant activity. Prepare concise reserve authority requests, reinsurance reports, serious loss reports, coverage position letters, and reports for underwriting and other departments.
Other Duties and Responsibilities:
- Customer Service: Uphold service standards by providing timely responses to inquiries.
- Special Projects: Participate in and complete assigned projects as needed.
- Professional Development: Maintain state licenses and engage in continuing education to support professional growth, as outlined in the annual Individual Development Plan.
- Travel: Occasional travel may be required, including attendance at mediations.
Specific Skills:
Strong oral and written communication skills, insightful analytical skills, effective negotiation skills, strong organizational and time management skills, technical knowledge of insurance coverage, negligence law and claim evaluation.
Minimum Job Requirements:
We are seeking 2 years (Associate Claim Examiner) or 7 years (Claim Examiner) of relevant experience handling general liability/casualty matters including prior examiner, adjuster, paralegal, attorney/lawyer and/or other transferable experience. Liability experience, multi-jurisdictional knowledge, advanced degrees and/or JD are a plus.
