Job Summary
Provision of general mental health services (evaluation, treatment and education) to student athletes who are currently enrolled at the University of Southern Mississippi and member of an intercollegiate sport team at USM. Assist with coordination and provision of consultation and relevant training to coaches, athletic trainers, and other athletic department staff. Ability to understand and comply with state statutes governing the ethical provision of mental health care, as well as those rules governing the NCAA and conference.
Primary Job Duties and Responsibilities
- Provide and maintain clinical and sport-performance caseload comprised of currently enrolled student-athletes for both individual and group service provision.
- Provide clinical services for current student-athletes including evaluation, treatment planning, progress monitoring, re-evaluation and appropriate referral where necessary.
- Assist with providing consultation and outreach services to coaches, athletic trainers, strength and conditioning, nutrition and other administrative personnel regarding the psychological well-being of individual student-athletes and team members.
- Serve as point of contact for assigned teams and facilitate team workshops based on empirically supported sport psychology principles.
- Engage in counseling-related activities including, but not limited to, maintaining counseling records, administering and interpreting psychological tests/inventories where qualified, referrals, and managing organizational variances of counseling cases.
- Enter clinical documentation in electronic medical records system.
- Assist with facilitating emergency mental health services when appropriate in collaboration with other campus entities to support holistic health of student-athlete and sport reintegration efforts.
- Assist with coordination of service delivery for special cases to include substance use, disordered eating, and severe-persistent mental illness education and treatment.
- Assist with providing daytime, evening, and weekend crisis intervention and emergency services in situations involving individual student-athletes or teams with support from Student Counseling Services as needed.
- Perform special functions for the department as requested by the Director of Athletics and other duties as assigned.
