Job Summary
The Metadata Coordinator coordinates the
creation, enhancement, and transformation of metadata for digital resources in
the Libraries’ Digital Collections, Institutional Repository, digital
humanities collaborations, grant projects, the Mississippi Digital Library, and
related initiatives.
Primary Duties and Responsibilities
1. Manages USM’s Metadata Guidelines and oversees the
metadata lifecycle from preliminary drafting through digital preservation
and access. Supervises a team of
student workers who draft metadata for digitized items including hiring,
training, assigning, and reviewing work. Creates and maintains procedural and
training documentation. Writes and ingests metadata with associated
content into the digital preservation system and dissemination points. Remediates
existing metadata within the digital preservation system and dissemination
points. Ensures finalized metadata is
accessible, discoverable, and interoperable across systems.
2. Coordinates MDL’s Metadata Best Practices and
ensures that all partners meet metadata requirements. Maintains, enhances, and teaches
established MDL standards, procedures, and best practices. Advises partner and potential
partner institutions on generating metadata and provides technical
assistance related to metadata templates and code. Updates all partners on metadata
developments, changes, upcoming events, and additional training
opportunities. Troubleshoots
and solves issues in the metadata that impact accessibility,
discoverability, and interoperability.
3. Serves as the metadata lead for creating,
enhancing, and transforming metadata for digital humanities,
collaborations, grant projects, etc. Serves as the primary contact and consultant for metadata related
projects. Ensures new projects adhere to established description,
accessibility, and discoverability standards. Supports ongoing
collaborations with training, drafting, reviewing, and approval of
metadata. Supervises project specific students.
4. Supports the metadata needs of the Institutional
Repository, Aquila. Advises
Aquila on metadata best practices related to research data projects.
Manages the crosswalk
between metadata in Aquila and the digital preservation system. Analyzes metadata compliance and
makes recommendations for improvements.
5. Presents workshops and trainings in collaboration with
other agencies and institutions as appropriate. Stays abreast of current
trends and standards in the field. Performs
other duties as assigned.
