Job Purpose:
The telemetry technician monitors and reports patients heart rhythm status using telemetry equipment.
Education & Training: High school diploma/GED equivalent.
Required Licenses/Certifications: BLS certification required. EKG Certification is preferred.
Work Experience: 1 – 3 years Telemetry experience preferred or experience as a PCT, CNA, EMT or Medical Assistant within a hospital setting preferred.
Physical Demands & Working Conditions: Ability to stand/walk between 6 to 8 hours and sit between 1 to 2 hours. Requires the motion to bend, squat, crawl, reach, lift, carry, push, and pull 1/3 or more of the time. Continuous use of hands and feet in gross and precise motor function. Lift up to 50 pounds 1/3 or more of the time. Work in an environment that includes exposure to body fluid.
Special Requirements: Verbal and writing ability required to communicate effectively in informing employees of activities and policies. Numerical ability required. Ability to receive, comprehend, and carry out instructions; ability to work safely with equipment, supplies, and materials; ability to comply with attendance requirements; ability to comply with Human Resource policies. Knowledge of basic medical terminology. Skilled in Microsoft office products and Meditech experience is preferred. Handle multiple priorities and the ability to make decisions under pressure. Manage anger, fear, hostility, and stress appropriately. Work alone effectively and with others in close proximity in a distracting environment.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Monitors heart rhythm pattern of patients in telemetry status of the hospital to detect abnormal pattern variances, using telemetry equipment.
- Reviews patient information to determine normal heart rhythm pattern, current pattern, and prior variances.
- Observes screen of cardiac monitor and listens for alarm to identify abnormal variation in heart rhythm.
- Informs patients nurse, charge nurse, or house supervisor of variances to initiate examination of patient.
- Measures length and height of patient’s heart rhythm pattern on graphic tape readout using calipers, and posts information on patients records every four hours and with any variances.
- Answers calls for nursing staff and completes order entry in Meditech, and all other assigned duties as determined by Supervisor, Charge RN, House Supervisor, or Manager as needed.
- May perform EKG’s as directed by nursing staff.
- Observe and report patient’s needs.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
