Job Purpose:Under the direct supervision of a registered pharmacist, supervisor, and/or director of pharmacy services, performs a variety of technical and clerical duties for the hospital-wide unit dose drug distribution system and intravenous admixture program. Responsible to maintain confidential reports, enter and retrieve data utilizing the computer system, prepare intravenous medication, including but not limited to, chemotherapeutic preparations, hyper-alimentations and antibiotics, fill automated medication dispensing system with a supply of unit dose medications, procure, and fill requests for pharmaceutical supplies and deliver supplies to nursing units.
Minimum Requirements:
Education & Training: High school diploma or equivalent
Required Licenses/Certifications: Certified pharmacy technician registered with Texas State Board of Pharmacy (TSBP), Certified with Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB) preferred; IV Certified; BLS is preferred.
Work Experience: 6 to 12 months of pharmacy technician preferred
Essential Job Responsibilities:
•Demonstrates the ability to perform specific competencies as listed on the Competency Validation Checklist.
•Check medication order for accuracy and completeness.
•Document all contact/attempts to contact and information needed to complete medication order.
•Verify that the requested medication and service is an approved service provided by the pharmacy.
•Maintain confidential reports, enter and retrieve data utilizing the computer system, prepare intravenous medication
•Use automated dispensing system (ADS) printout, fills each ADS with appropriate supply of medications.
•Responsible for accurate transcription, interpretation of a medication order.
•For each drug, identify the prescribing physician, the drug, quantity, day supply, directions, and the date the medication order was written.
•Add ancillary supply items and educational material for each order.
•Verify doctor licensure before medication order can be accepted from a new doctor
•Restocks nursing units, operating room, recovery room, and ancillary departments with a limited supply of floor stock medications and supplies.
•Escalate questions regarding the medication order to a pharmacist to interpret or provide direction on processing and fulfillment
•Prioritize medication order according to urgency or date needed.
•Attends all mandatory education programs and can describe his/her responsibilities related to general safety and regulatory compliance.
•Attends all required department-specific education and training programs and can describe his/her responsibilities related to department safety and specific job related hazards.
•Demonstrates proper body mechanics in all functions.
•Wears proper identification while on duty.
•Perform other duties as assigned
