The Utah Department of Natural Resources, Division of Wildlife Resources, has four to six seasonal positions (no benefits) available at the Central Region Office in Springville, Utah. These appointments will be full time (40 hours per week) from approximately May 26 through Sept. 1, 2025.

Job duties
These positions are primarily tasked with assisting DWR biologists in the monitoring and removal of common carp in Utah Lake.

Primary duties include:

  • Deploying and maintaining automated, baited carp traps on Utah Lake
  • Harvesting carp using a variety of methodologies (e.g., traps, seining, gill nets, etc.)
  • Collecting harvest and catch data (e.g., length, weight, species, etc.) on a variety of fish species
  • Tagging carp, June suckers and other species with PIT tags
  • Maintaining equipment and sampling gear

Secondary tasks include conducting creel surveys at community waters, assisting with monitoring of June sucker populations in Utah Lake and other tasks, as needed.

Job requirements and skills
Applicants must be 18 or older, have a valid driver’s license at the time of employment and must successfully pass a criminal history background check upon hire. Applicants should have the ability to work independently and follow written and verbal instructions.

Preference may be given to applicants with a Bachelor of Science degree or those actively pursuing, or having achieved, a university degree in biological sciences, and those available through Sept. 1, 2025.

Additional desired skills include, but are not limited to:

  • Experience and ability to operate boats of 20–28 feet, telehandlers and other heavy equipment, dump trailers, etc.
  • Experience with fisheries collection techniques, such as gill nets, seining, trap nets, etc.
  • Experience with word processing and spreadsheet programs

Other
The typical work schedule is from Monday to Friday, 8 to 10 hours per day. Rotational weekend or evening work is anticipated. Applicants must be willing to conduct fieldwork for an extended period of time in a variety of weather conditions. Work requires physical exertion, and may require the ability to stand, hike, walk over rough surfaces, bend, crouch, stoop, stretch, reach and lift moderately heavy items (up to 50 lbs.) in a recurring manner and/or for long periods of time in a wet environment.
