Native Aquatics Technician I (Wildlife Technician I)

The Utah Department of Natural Resources, Division of Wildlife Resources, has four (4) seasonal positions (no benefits) available at the Northeastern Region Office in Vernal, Utah. These appointments will last from approximately April/May to October 2025. Dates can be flexible to accommodate degree-seeking students. Housing is provided.
Successful candidates will work with threatened and endangered aquatic species within the Upper Colorado Endangered Fish Recovery Program and Utah Wildlife Action Plan (fishes, amphibians and mollusks).
Job duties
- Invasive fish removal on the Green River via jon boat/raft electrofishing and fyke netting
- Monitoring threatened and endangered native fishes using a barge, raft and boat electrofishing, seining, trammel netting, light trap surveys and PIT technology
- Safely trailering, launching and operating jon boats and rafts
- Data collection and entry
- Maintenance of equipment and sampling gear
- Potential opportunities to assist DWR sections with other fish and wildlife projects, as available (e.g., rotenone treatments, gill net surveys, wildlife surveys)
Job requirements and skills
Applicants must be 18 years or older and have a valid driver’s license at time of employment. Applicants should have the ability to work independently and well with others and follow written and verbal instructions. Successful applicants will have an education in biology or a background in a closely related field. Work requires physical exertion. May require the ability to stand, walk over rough surfaces, bend, crouch, stoop, stretch, reach and lift moderately heavy items (up to 50 lbs.) in a recurring manner and/or for long periods of time.
Preference may be given to applicants with an interest in or knowledge of aquatic species recovery, as well as experience with four-wheel-drive vehicles, towing and operating watercraft, and identifying sensitive aquatic species of northeastern Utah.
Preference will be given to individuals seeking a BS degree or who have a BS degree.
Other
This position requires the ability and willingness to drive long distances, perform strenuous physical activity and work long hours (8–12) outdoors in harsh conditions (inclement weather and bugs) while maintaining a safe and positive work environment. Overnight camping, occasional weekend work and backpacking in remote areas will also be required.
