Job Summary

UT Southwestern is in search of a skilled and experienced Automotive Mechanic with a minimum of three (3) years of paid work experience for their Fleet Maintenance Operations team. Works under minimal supervision to provide skilled mechanical work in maintenance and repair of motor vehicles and variety of other motor-operated equipment.

To be successful, the automotive mechanic is certified in ASE and EPA Section 609; and active holder of Texas Motor Vehicle Inspector License and valid State of Texas Driver License; with intermediate computer skills and highly skilled in the following:

  • Air- and water-cooled engines
  • Electrical and hydraulic systems
  • Transmissions
  • Front and rear ends
  • Brakes
  • Tune-ups
  • Carburetors
  • Electronic exhaust systems
  • Wiring of engine and chassis
  • Clutches
  • Air conditioning, etc.

Ability to perform work on variety of motor-operated vehicles and equipment such as cars, trucks, tractors, lawn mowers, tillers, edgers, post hole diggers, power blowers, scooters, forklifts, tree sprayers, etc.

Work Location: Dallas Campus, assist other UTSW buildings and travel off-site as necessary.

Shift Requirement: Day Shift position, Monday through Friday; hours can range from 6:00 AM to 6:00 PM.

Minimum Experience and Education Requirements

  • Requires graduation from high school, vocational school, or GED.
  • Requires three (3) years of experience in automotive repairs.
  • Requires EPA Section 609 - Refrigerant Recovery and Recycling Certification obtained prior to hire.
  • Requires Texas Motor Vehicle Inspector License obtained prior to hire.
  • Requires active State of Texas Driver License prior to hire.
  • Requires Intermediate computer skills.
  • Requires flexibility in working hours.
  • Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) certification preferred.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Work requires use of hands, shop, precision tools and electronic diagnostic equipment.
  • Work requires good knowledge of combustion engines, electrical systems, carburetors, hydraulics, automatic and manual transmissions, and differentials.
  • Work requires accuracy in adjusting close tolerances.
  • Work requires alertness and careful attention to avoid serious injury to self or others.
  • Work requires walking, bending, climbing, lifting up to 75 lbs., pulling/pushing equipment up to 75 lbs.

Job Duties

  • Maintains, services, and repairs air- and water-cooled engines, electrical and hydraulic systems, transmissions, front and rear ends, brakes, tune-ups, carburetors, electronic exhaust systems, wiring of engine and chassis, clutches, air conditioning, etc. on variety of motor-operated vehicles and equipment such as cars, trucks, tractors, lawn mowers, tillers, edgers, post hole diggers, power blowers, scooters, forklifts, tree sprayers, etc.
  • Performs scheduled preventive maintenance as required.
  • Repairs vehicles and equipment in off-site emergencies as needed.
  • Maintains and cleans tools and equipment and keeps work area in neat and orderly condition.
  • May provide working supervision to semi-skilled workers of lower grade.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Working Conditions

  • Work is performed primarily in the vehicle repair area.
  • Working conditions involve exposure to two or more disagreeable elements, such as fumes, noise, grease, oil, vibration, extreme weather (heat or cold), etc.
  • Flexibility in working hours as needed.

Any qualifications to be considered as equivalents in lieu of stated minimum require prior approval of Vice President for Human Resources Administration or his/her designee.

This position is security-sensitive and subject to Texas Education Code §51.215, which authorizes UT Southwestern to obtain criminal history record information.
