What are the responsibilities and job description for the Park Rangers Aide position at Utah State Parks?
Escalante Petrified Forest State Park is looking for a few motivated people to help out from the First of April to the end of October 2025.
We have essentially three categories of work here.
Entrance station and gift shop. Here you will greet visitors, sell passes, inspect boats and run the gift shop. You will handle money and assist visitors with information about the park and the general area. I expect that you will be courteous and respectful at every encounter. Keep personal distractions to an absolute minimum. Stay off your phones unless there is a family emergency. If there is nothing to do, don’t do it here. Go find customer service opportunities.
Interpretation. This will happen both organically around the park and in the form of organized programs. Interpretation is the telling of stories and making the information interesting to the visitors. It creates memories associated with the park and is much more than trivial information. I expect that you will have two organized programs that you will present at scheduled times. These will be of your own invention. If you need help, please ask me. I have several years of experience.
Maintenance. Keeping the park clean and functional is a critical part of the success of Utah State Parks. We are judged by the restrooms. Even if the rest of the park is beautiful, if the restrooms are dirty, it will reflect poorly on all of us. Everyone helps clean, even the park manager. Things break and they need to be repaired to a high standard as quickly as possible. I don’t expect everyone to expertly repair everything but I do expect you will do what you can safely. I expect everyone to be proactive and ambitious. If the VC is slow, then go find something to do.
We are a small staff so everyone helps out wherever there is a need. We will try to give you the experiences you want but we will also move you around as park needs dictate. We expect seasonal positions not to be just as a temporary workforce, but as learning and growing opportunities for you. It is important to us to nurture the careers of future Utah State Parks Employees. Please reach out to me for help with resumes and applications. I will provide as many training opportunities as I can to make this a valuable experience.
