Computer Science Instructor for Utah Tech PREP (Summer STEM Camp) (AmeriCorps Position)

BACKGROUND:

Utah Tech PREP is an academically intense, mathematics-based, summer enrichment program, designed to develop critical thinking skills and prepare students for a successful college experience. Utah Tech PREP identifies high-achieving middle school students with an interest in math and science and challenges them to grow in new ways. Students attend the program over the course of three summers and complete coursework, team projects, class presentations, field trips, special events, and examinations. AmeriCorps Service

The individual selected for this position will serve as an AmeriCorps member. AmeriCorps is a national service opportunity, not just a regular job. This is a wonderful opportunity to add service and hands-on teaching experience to your resume! This is an especially terrific opportunity for someone who is pursuing a career in education or STEM. AmeriCorps members sign an agreement to complete a term of service. You will be expected to complete a minimum of 100 service hours throughout your term.

This position will provide a living allowance of $1,400 paid over the term of service. The $1,400 stipend will be split up and paid on a bi-weekly basis (every other week) during your term of service. In addition, an Education Award* of $416.17 will be awarded upon successful completion of hours.

*The Segal AmeriCorps Education Award is a post-service benefit received by individuals who complete terms of national service in approved AmeriCorps programs. This award (similar to a Pell Grant) can be used to repay qualified student loans and to pay current educational expenses at eligible institutions.

The education award is valid for 7 years following the end of an individual’s AmeriCorps term.

**NOTE: You will not be paid hourly.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES OF AN INSTRUCTOR:

Design and lead instruction of 20-25 students with the following specific duties:

Be the lead instructor of a Computer Science course (two sections). We will provide you with a basic curriculum, but you will be charged with expanding it to your strengths and running the classroom. This will include but is not limited to creating assessments, enforcing classroom management strategies, communicating with parents, and keeping track of grades, etc.

  • Topics include: programming fundamentals, functions, and data structures taught using Python.
  • Students are in middle school, ranging in age from 11 to13.
  • Develop and execute curriculum including daily lessons, labs, practice problems, quizzes, and exams.
  • Attend all classes, be engaged in learning class material, and actively help students during class time. (Cell phone use is not permitted while interacting with students.)
  • Serve as a “mentor” to students, encouraging the development of a commitment to educational achievement.
  • Attend and contribute to any parent/student/teacher meetings.
  • Contact parents regarding student performance.
  • Attend staff meetings when required.
  • Be a positive representative of Utah Tech PREP and Utah Tech University.

QUALIFICATIONS FOR AN INSTRUCTOR:

  • Must be at least 18 years of age, have a high school diploma or equivalent, and be a United States citizen or permanent resident.
  • Completion of at least one year of college.
  • Currently be enrolled in college with 3.0 or better GPA.
  • Current undergraduate students are encouraged to apply. A completed degree is not required.
  • Computer Science majors are preferred
  • Required: B grade or better in CS 1400 and CS 1410 and a recommendation from a Computer Science faculty member.
  • Commitment and interest in assisting middle and high school students in their academic and personal growth.
  • Prior experience working with adolescents (preferred).
  • Ability to use initiative, demonstrate dependability, and use time constructively.
  • Ability to meet and deal with parents cordially and proficiently.
  • Ability to work with attention to detail, maturity, professional demeanor, tact, diplomacy, and sense of humor.

DATES: May 27 – July 17, 2025 (10-15 hours per week for a minimum of 100 total hours)

  • Instructors must be available, in person, for the full six (6) weeks of program operation and the training days.
  • Instructors teach two 60-minute class Monday through Thursday, for a total of approximately 8 hours per week.
  • Must be available to work in-person on the following dates:
  • AmeriCorps Training: May 12, 12:00 p.m. – 5:00 p.m.
  • Staff Training Dates: May 27 and June 2, 9:00 – 11:00 a.m.
  • Program Dates: June 9 – July 17, Monday - Thursday (excluding June 16 and July 4).
  • Logic Class times: 10:00 – 11:00 a.m., 12:50 – 1:50 p.m.
  • Additional time will be spent on accompanying lesson prep and grading as needed
  • Our closing celebration is on July 17 from 7:00 – 9:00 p.m. Attendance is optional but highly encouraged.

RATE OF PAY: $1,400 stipend $416.17 education award = $1,816.17 total compensation

  • The $1,400 stipend will be split up and paid on a bi-weekly basis during your term of service. The education award is made available following the successful completion of your term of service.
  • The education award is sent to your school of choice and can then be used to pay for education expenses (student loans, tuition, or other education-related expenses). Many schools will allow you to withdraw the funds as needed (similar to scholarship or other granted funds). You can apply for the education award immediately or wait for up to seven years following your term of completion. While serving as an AmeriCorps member, you are also eligible to have your student loans deferred (by request).
