What are the responsibilities and job description for the Academic Advisor for College of Health Sciences position at Utah Tech University?
Advise students interested in pursuing Health Science degrees in the College of Health Sciences, including the College’s Career & Technical Education (CTE) programs, as well as trained to help with other academic programs in the College of Health Sciences as needed. Assist students in both pre-requisites as well as major, minor and/or degree of study requirements. This position will be supervised by the Dean of the College and the Director of College Advisement and will interface closely with Community Engagement (oversight of CTE grant) and the Advisement office. - Advise students for certificate and degree programs in the College of Health Sciences, including the College’s CTE programs. Advise students with health science pre-requisite coursework planning, as well as degree attainment planning, once admitted to a health science program.
- Work with College of Health Sciences, Career and Technical Education and the Academic Advisement Center to assist students with applications for graduation, process financial aid audits, conduct and prepare degree audit contracts in preparation for graduation.
- Track and work with students who have declared a Career and Technical major within the Health Sciences or other applicable programs under the CTE grant. Assist students with application for acceptance into CTE program. Assist in scoring applications and interviewing committee members when requested.
- Maintain regular office hours and attend Program Advisory Committee and advisement meetings.
- Represent advisement in University promotional and freshman events, including freshman orientation and presentations in local high schools.
- Refer students to other agencies for assistance, such as Financial Aid & Scholarships, Disability Resource Center, TRiO Programs, Booth Wellness Center, Community Outreach programs, etc.
- Attend professional development opportunities for advisement and the college; serve on various university committees.
- Assist with the commencement program at the University.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
- Bachelor's degree in a related field required; Master's degree also preferred.
- Two years of advising or related experience required; higher education advisement experience preferred.
- Familiarity with college admissions guidelines, standards, and procedures, CTE guidelines and mission, and higher education admissions counseling in general.
- Proficient computer skills; willingness to learn new systems.
- Strong organizational and interpersonal skills, including the ability to work well with faculty, staff, and students.
- Strong writing and oral communication skills; ability to exercise critical human relations skills in establishing and maintaining effective working relations with university stakeholders.
- Background must show ability to positively relate to multicultural students, first generation students, non-traditional students, and students in transition.
