What are the responsibilities and job description for the Controller position at Utica Comets?
The Controller will provide both transactional and strategic support to the organization and has oversight for the accounting, financial, information systems, risk management, and human resources functions of the company and related entities and will be the chief financial spokesperson for the organization. The Controller will report directly to the President.

• Drive financial, technology, human capital and strategic leadership across our business as we fulfill our mission
• Oversee and review preparation of monthly financial statements by Controller and Accounting team.
• Work with outside tax consultants to prepare and file tax returns and affiliated information for numerous entities.
• Evaluate and analyze the accounting and reporting aspects (GAAP/Tax) of key business strategies
• Evaluate and monitor credit risk of customer/receivables
• Optimize the handling of bank and deposit relationships and initiate appropriate strategies to enhance cash position.
• Proactively perform ad hoc analysis to support the President and senior leadership
• Maintain relationships with bankers, external CPA’s (audit and tax), vendors, organizations/alliances and other third parties
• Provide leadership and backup to the HR function including talent acquisition, employee relations, compensation and benefits, compliance and organizational development, ensuring alignment with business objectives.
• Support the IT Function to implement processes, frameworks and systems that allow us to capture and utilize timely and accurate data across the business to make better decisions.
• Enhance and/or develop, implement and enforce policies and procedures of the organization by way of systems that will improve the overall operation and effectiveness of the corporation.
• Develop and communicate business progress, reports and metrics with President and other key stakeholders.
• Complete annual operating budget and three-year projections; project financial performance for short-term and long-term forecasts; track and report budget to actual performance and reasons for variances; forecast earnings to determine quarterly and end of the year distributions
• Manage cash-flow and cash-flow projections, including variances and other reporting
• Establish credibility throughout the organization as an effective developer of solutions to business challenges.
• Work with the President and other Leadership on the strategic vision including fostering and cultivating stakeholder relationships, as well as assisting in the development and negotiation of contracts.
• Provide strategic financial input and leadership on decision making issues affecting the organization.
• Partner with all members of the senior management team and other company leadership on developing our forward-looking company strategy and supporting a culture of cohesion and accountability.
• Establish credibility throughout the organization as an effective developer of solutions to business challenges.
• Work with the President and other Leadership on the strategic vision including fostering and cultivating stakeholder relationships, as well as assisting in the development and negotiation of contracts.
• Provide strategic financial input and leadership on decision making issues affecting the organization.
• Partner with all members of the senior management team and other company leadership on developing our forward-looking company strategy and supporting a culture of cohesion and accountability.
• Serve as a point of contact for investor relations
Requirements
• 15 years of finance and accounting experience.
• Ability to implement procedures and best practices within the finance department
• Experience working within a sports, entertainment or food service company preferred
• CPA or advanced degree strongly desired. BS Degree in Accounting or Finance.
• At least seven year of experience overseeing Accounting, HR and IT functions, in a finance/strategy role
• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, must be able to work effectively and influence people within a culture of diverse personalities.
• Identifying the underlying principles, reasons, or facts of information by breaking down information or data into separate parts.
• Ability to read, analyze, and interpret the most complex documents. Ability to respond effectively to the most sensitive inquiries or complaints. Ability to make effective and persuasive speeches and presentations on controversial or complex topics.
• Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form. Ability to provide concrete solutions to a variety of problems that arise in each of the companies’ departments.
