Position Summary:
The Rigging Technician is responsible for the construction, maintenance, and moving of substation equipment/systems. This is a skilled position that requires a high amount of teamwork and good communications skills. Candidates who are safety-oriented and dedicated to doing their job as efficiently as possible are a good fit for this position.
Riggers typically work in the construction industry, as such they work with heavy machinery and materials. Candidates must be able to follow directions and designated work plans; they also must be mechanically inclined. This position may be required to travel and/or work nights, weekends, and overtime hours.
Principle Duties & Responsibilities:
- Drives and operates straight trucks and tractor trailers.
- Work safely while performing new construction, maintenance, or repair work of energized and de-energized overhead work.
- Maintains company vehicles, equipment, and tools in good working order.
- Does all other related work as required to complete the job.
- Inspects the crane or boom truck.
- Inspects cribbing and outriggers of crane equipment.
- Assist with the set-up of the crane or boom truck.
- Load, secure, and transport oversized heavy loads on trucks
Position Requirements:
- Must possess or be willing to obtain a valid Class A CDL with DOT medical certification as well as Tanker and Haz-Mat Endorsements.
- Will be trained in proper flagging and signaling.
- Learn to read load charts and rigging.
- Must be willing to learn all aspects of substation and rigging work and techniques.
Skills and Specification Requirements:
- Knowledge of Utili-Serve safety rules, regulations, work practices, standards, and procedures associated with electrical substations and high voltages.
- Knowledge of hazards involved with working on and around energized electrical systems (lines and equipment/high and low voltage).
- Knowledge of the electrical theory and principles related to electricity, magnetism, and electrical equipment.
- Knowledge of switching devices and equipment used to de-energize and isolate circuits and devices on our customers electrical substation system.
- Knowledge of various connections, configurations, procedures, and phasing of circuits to transformers, breakers, and disconnects.
- Skill in handling conflict and uncertain situations.
- Skill in handling multiple tasks and prioritizing.
- Skill in properly using, inspecting, maintaining, and safely storing PPE (Personal Protective Equipment) and PPD (Personal Protective Devices).
- Skill in using tools and equipment to troubleshoot and then repair or replace electrical/electronic devices/components.
- Ability to climb ladders, work on and around elevated work positions/platforms, work in enclosed/confined spaces, and work as an enclosed space attendant.
- Ability to apply knowledge and skills obtained from OJT (On Job Training) to daily work activities.
- Ability to read and understand oral, written, and electronic instructions, technical manuals, blueprints, sketches, diagrams, and drawings.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective communication and professional working relationships with employees, customers, and the public.
- Ability to organize, inspect, and safely use various hand and powered tools, equipment, apparatus, instruments, and materials used in the installation, maintenance, and repair of electrical substations and related equipment.
- Ability to perform strenuous work in all types of weather conditions.
- Ability to work with frequent interruptions, changes in priorities, and work scope.
- Ability to properly lift and carry equipment and supplies weighing up to fifty (50) pounds.

- Derrick Trucks and Boom Trucks.
- Backhoes, Excavators, and Skid Steer Loaders.
- Rough Terrain Telescopic Forklifts.
- Rough Terrain Cranes.
- Mobile Hydraulic Truck Cranes.
- Road Tractors.
- Hydraulic Lifting Systems.
Education and Experience Required:
- High School diploma or equivalent experience in related electric utility or construction field is required.
