Meter Reader

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Include the following and other duties as assigned:

Accurately reads, rereads, and rechecks various electric and water meters and records reading in hand-held device and other applicable equipment; keeps accurate records.

Drives company vehicles in the course and scope of employment, in a safe and professional manner.

Assists with the repair and maintenance of water meter boxes and ERTs, upon direction.

Inspects and reports meters and connections with defects, damage, and/or unauthorized connections.

Verifies readings to locate abnormal consumption and records reason(s) for fluctuations.

Answers customer questions with accurate information, tactfully, or politely refers customer to Customer Service.

Turns service off for non-payment, as directed.

Handles dogs and other animals safely and with good public relations.

Distributes and attaches hang notices in visible locations.

Delivers NSBU mail, including outgoing bills, to USPS daily.

Possesses and applies basic knowledge of the mechanisms of electric and water meters; possesses knowledge of the geography and street locations of New Smyrna Beach and vicinity; possesses the ability to read and navigate with maps.

Expresses related facts in a clear, concise, and organized manner; modifies delivery, language, or content to account for the characteristics and needs of the audience; writes clear, concise, and organized documents, and reports addressing basic concepts and facts.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Language Skills                                

Ability to read, analyze, and interpret documents, such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and policy and procedure manuals; ability to write routine reports; ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from managers, customers, and other team members.

Mathematical Skills

Ability to work with mathematical concepts and calculate figures, such as discounts, interest, commissions, proportions, percentages, area, circumference, and volume.   

Reasoning Ability

Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists; ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written or oral form.

Computer Skills                                           

Ability to use and understand Microsoft Office products and meter reading equipment.

Physical Demands

While performing the duties of this position, the employee is regularly required to stand, walk, climb or balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl, and use hands. The employee is occasionally required to sit. The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities are required for this job, with or without an accommodation. These include close, distant, and color vision. The incumbent is exposed to risks such as wet and/or humid conditions; and outside weather conditions, including extreme cold and/or heat.

Education and Experience   

This position requires the following education and experience:                           

High School Diploma/GED required.  Previous meter reading experience preferred.

Certifications, Licenses, Registrations

This position requires the following certifications, licenses, and/or registrations:

None.

Other Qualifications               

Florida Driver’s License Class E required. Ability to work flexible hours, as required.
