Underground Distribution Lineperson

A semi-skilled line worker that installs and fixes underground distribution and transmission systems, which includes poles, cables, and electrical systems.

Essential Functions & Responsibilities:

  • Assists with installation, operation, maintenance and repair of underground electrical power lines and systems.
  • Assists in the construction, operation, maintenance, and repair of distribution utility power lines.
  • Assists with service calls concerning power outages and electrical problems.
  • Receives training both in book/classroom skills and on the job skills. Must continue to pass ongoing training to precede to higher skill/job levels.
  • Operates motorized equipment, use hand tools, and perform routine maintenance on electrical equipment, machinery, and tools. Performs janitorial duties on equipment and in shop areas.
  • Stocks and services vehicles to be equipped to respond to emergency situations.
  • Work nights, weekends, and holidays for extended periods; may be required to perform duties as part of recovery force during emergencies and disasters.
  • Works at varying locations, in manholes and/or in confined spaces with proper Personal Protective Equipment.
  • Any other duties related to the installation of underground power supply.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Must be 18 years of age or older.
  • Able to drive all vehicles assigned to the line crew, operate digger derrick to set equipment and use jackhammer, etc.
  • Must be able to work long hours and overtime during holidays, emergencies, weekends, etc. Subject to call out work.
  • Must be able to meet and maintain weight restrictions for work truck as identified by truck manufacturer. 

Education & Experience

  • Prior experience in the electrical powerline industry.
  • Ability to provide proof of work experience, schooling, and other certifications obtained during career.

Pre-Screen

  • Upon offer, employees may be required to complete and pass a pre-employment drug screen, background, and/or MVR check.

License & Certifications:

  • Driver License Required, willingness to obtain a valid CDL within 90 days of employment preferred.

Travel Requirements:

  • Willing to travel out of state for emergency storm work.

Physical Requirements:

  • OCCASIONAL (up to 33%): Sitting, Kneeling, and Crawling
  • FREQUENT (up to 66 %): Stooping, Squatting, Body Twisting, Manual Dexterity, Reading, Climbing Ladders, Climbing On/Off Truck, Climbing Poles, Gripping, and Climbing Stairs
  • CONTINUOUS (up to 100%): Standing, Walking, Sense of Touch, Speaking Clearly, Seeing Distant, Seeing, Reaching, Range of Motion, Hearing-Speech Range, Depth Perception, Color Vision, Lifting, Carrying, Pushing, Pulling, Lifting Over 10 lbs. to 50 lbs., Balancing, Lifting Up to 10 lbs., and Lifting Up to 50 lbs.

Safety

Due to the inherently dangerous nature of the industry and requirements to work with or around hazardous equipment, employees must have sufficient eyesight to judge distance/coordination of equipment and tools, be able to maintain attention and concentration for extended periods, be able to withstand exposure to all kinds of weather while completing work assignments, be able to wear personal protective equipment as necessary, be able to enter and exit a vehicle numerous times a day, have the endurance necessary to traverse various terrain, be capable of performing job duties throughout a standard 8- or 10-hour day, be able to communicate with others, read, write, and comprehend written/verbal job instructions and information, and communicate and handle conflict professionally.

  • Able to identify job site hazards.
  • Exhibits and carries out cognitive problem-solving skills.
  • Able to read, comprehend, and visualize job build and all prints.
  • Works near/around energized, hazardous parts and equipment.
  • Exposed to traffic.
  • Works around excessive noise from machines (bore drill, backhoe, trencher, mini excavator, bucket trucks, digger derricks, concrete saw, jackhammers).
  • May exposed to hot and cold environments, poisonous plants or reptiles, and stinging insects.
