JOB DESCRIPTION:
The Division of Gastroenterology and Hepatology at the University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston is seeking an experienced Transplant Hepatologist to serve as Medical Director of the Liver Transplant Program.  The Medical Director will have an opportunity to lead and expand the Liver Transplant Program within the rapidly growing UTMB Health System.  The Medical Director is charged with providing comprehensive and leading-edge clinical care in transplant hepatology both locally and regionally across Southeast Texas.  

A search is being conducted amid unprecedented opportunity at UTMB for programmatic building and growth of our solid organ transplant programs. The University’s leadership is highly aligned in its goal to grow the clinical and academic profile of The Department of Medicine as well as the reputation of the John Sealy School of Medicine (SOM). The next Medical Director will be a nationally recognized Hepatologist with a history of a strong commitment to excellence in clinical care and education or research. She/he will possess the leadership and management skills to provide direction and oversight for our liver transplant program.  The Director will assume a high-profile position within the Department of Medicine and UTMB Health and provided with significant resources to carry out the mandate of growing the transplant program into the best performing program in the region.

 

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

  • Work collaboratively with a diverse group of surgeons, physicians, and nurse coordinators on growth initiatives to increase liver transplant referrals and liver transplant activity
  • Collaborate with transplant administrator regarding finances, budgets, operations, staffing, and strategic planning to identify pathways to increase liver transplant volume
  • Oversee liver transplant program regulatory and quality activities to ensure adherence to regulatory requirements
  • Develop and maintain clinical and administrative policies in liver transplant, as well as quality indicators
  • Organize, direct, and implement practices to assure continued compliance with applicable laws including the guidelines established by UNOS, CMS and the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Hospitals
  • Oversee review process of transplant-related adverse events and complications in collaboration with surgical director and transplant administrator
  • Work with multidisciplinary team and across ancillary departments to address systemic issues and changes in process
  • Participate in inpatient and outpatient care for transplant candidates, living donors, and transplant recipients 

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • MD degree or equivalent with board certification in Gastroenterology and Transplant Hepatology
  • Satisfy the requirements for designation as the UNOS primary liver transplant physician
  • Eligible for an unrestricted Texas medical license

 

SALARY:
Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience.
