REQUIRED EDUCATION / EXPERIENCE:

Bachelor’s degree in basic science or equivalent and 2 years of related experience or Master’s degree in basic science or equivalent and no experience required.

PREFERRED EDUCATION / EXPERIENCE:

Bachelor’s degree in Molecular Biology, Biochemistry, Genetics, or a related field and 2 years of related experience or Master’s degree and no experience required.

JOB SUMMARY:

Research Associate II performs a variety of routine and non-routine research assignments and experiments and assists with lab maintenance responsibilities.

JOB MARKETING STATEMENT:

We are seeking a highly motivated and detail-oriented Research Associate 2 to join our dynamic research team at a leading academic university. This role is pivotal to the success of our laboratory operations, focusing on critical molecular biology techniques and next-generation sequencing technologies. The successful candidate will play a key role in maintaining the laboratory, conducting DNA/RNA isolation, performing quality control assessments, and preparing libraries for sequencing.

MAJOR DUTIES / CRITICAL TASKS:

Laboratory Maintenance: Ensure the laboratory is well-organized and compliant with safety and operational standards. This includes managing supplies, calibrating instruments, and maintaining a clean and efficient workspace.

DNA/RNA Isolation: Perform various techniques for the isolation of high-quality nucleic acids from different sample types. This requires a thorough understanding of molecular biology protocols and the ability to troubleshoot as needed.

Quality Control: Conduct rigorous quality control checks on isolated nucleic acids to ensure they meet the standards required for downstream applications. This involves the use of spectrophotometry, gel electrophoresis, and other analytical techniques.

Library Preparation for Sequencing: Prepare libraries for sequencing on state-of-the-art platforms such as Illumina and Oxford Nanopore instruments. This includes understanding the principles of library construction, size selection, and adapter ligation.

Sequencing and Data Analysis:

Operate sequencing instruments, monitor sequencing runs, and perform initial data quality checks. The candidate will also have the opportunity to engage in bioinformatics, learning data analysis workflows to contribute to the interpretation of sequencing results.

Under general supervision, performs routine and non-routine research assignments and experiments of moderate complexity.

Plans, coordinates, provides setup and conducts standard research experiments following general technical instructions.

Prepares biological assays and conducts quantitative and qualitative analysis.

Makes modifications to research procedures as determined by Principal Investigator.

Maintains records of all tests performed and data collected and provides preliminary analysis of results.

Assists in the compilation and tabulation of data and analysis of final data.

Ensures the accurate assembly, calibration, operation and modification of a variety of laboratory equipment as defined by appropriate guidelines.

Maintains lab for environmental safety compliance.

Maintains lab inventory of supplies and equipment.

Performs literature searches as outlined by the Principal Investigator.

May provide guidance to junior research staff.

Adheres to internal controls established for department.

Performs related duties as required.

SKILLS:

Proficiency in molecular biology techniques, particularly DNA/RNA isolation, PCR, and electrophoresis.

Experience with library preparation for next-generation sequencing platforms (Illumina and Oxford Nanopore) is highly desirable.

Basic understanding of bioinformatics and a keen interest in learning more about data analysis.

Strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and the ability to work independently and as part of a team.

Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal, and the ability to maintain accurate and detailed laboratory records.
