Armed Security Guard (Full-Time)

As an Armed Security Guard at Uvalde Memorial Hospital, you will play a crucial role in ensuring the safety and security of patients, staff, and visitors. Your visible presence will help deter crime and unauthorized activity while maintaining a welcoming and secure environment. This role requires vigilance, professionalism, and quick decision-making in various security situations. You will patrol the hospital premises, respond to emergencies, enforce hospital policies, and assist in ensuring a safe environment.

JOB SUMMARY: An armed Security Officer is essential to the safety of the staff and patients at UMH.  Responds to emergencies, coordinates air ambulances to transport patients, patrols all UMH campuses, participates in and coordinates emergency management exercises, and assists plant operations with fire safety, drills, and education.  The security officer also ensures safety for patients in ICU and Emergency department that require 1:1 security watch.   This non-exempt role reports directly to the Security Director.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

1.Visible Deterrence & Patrolling:

• Provide a visible presence to deter crime and prohibited activities by patrolling the hospital's interior and exterior, including parking lots and grounds.

2.Rapid Response:

• Ensure that only authorized personnel are admitted to the hospital premises by monitoring entrances, checking credentials, and managing visitor access to restricted areas.

3.Access Control:

4.Escort Services:

• Escort visitors, patients, and personnel to and from parking areas for their safety. Assist stranded motorists on hospital property when needed.

5.Minor Maintenance & Assistance:

• Assist in minor maintenance tasks and communicate with on-call maintenance personnel for any larger issues that need attention.

6.Incident Investigation & Reporting:

• Investigate incidents of unusual circumstances reported by hospital personnel, visitors, physicians, or patients. Write clear, accurate, and legible reports documenting incidents, investigatory steps, and results.

7.Building & Grounds Inspection:

• Patrol hospital buildings and grounds, inspecting doors, windows, and locks to ensure a high level of security. Report safety and fire hazards identified during routine patrols.

8.Courtesy & Assistance:

• Provide courteous responses to inquiries from patients, visitors, and personnel. Offer assistance when needed.

9.Electronic Monitoring:

• Utilize electronic security equipment, including closed-circuit televisions and alarms, to monitor the hospital and maintain a secure environment.

10.Enforcement of Policies:

• Enforce all hospital policies and procedures, specifically life safety, environment of care, and emergency management, ensuring compliance and safety at all times.

11.Patient Transportation:

• Provide transportation for patients to and from hospital facilities, ensuring their safety during transit. Keep appropriate documentation, including mileage records, and recognize and respond to the unique needs of different age groups during transport.

12.Firearm & Equipment Handling:

• Maintain proper handling, storage, and use of firearms and security equipment per hospital policies and legal guidelines.

QUALIFICATIONS:

• High school diploma or equivalent required.
• Level 3 Security Certification required.
• Peace Officer License preferred.
• Current BLS for healthcare provider certification required.
• Current Class C driver’s license with no citations in the past 2 years, and must not have more than 1 in a year after hire.
• One to three years’ experience in the field of law enforcement and/or security required.

Functional Job Requirements:

Job requirements include the ability to sit, stand, walk, kneel, bend, squat, and reach as needed, along with good finger dexterity and the capacity for repetitive hand and finger motions. Adequate vision and hearing are necessary, and the role may require pushing and pulling equipment. Proficiency in handling firearms is essential. Candidates must be able to communicate effectively in English, both verbally and in writing, with additional languages preferred.
