Groundskeeper/Mechanic I (Full-time)

This role is ideal for individuals who enjoy variety in their daily tasks and take pride in keeping both the interior and exterior of a hospital in top condition. In addition to maintaining the exterior grounds, this position will perform general maintenance projects which may include light construction, assisting certified mechanics, painting, carpentry, etc.  If you are a hands-on worker with a strong work ethic, this is an excellent opportunity to contribute to a positive and well-maintained healthcare environment. 

JOB SUMMARY:

The Multi-Skilled General Maintenance Worker and Groundskeeper is responsible for a variety of tasks that ensure the hospital facilities and grounds are well-maintained, clean, and safe. This role involves performing basic repairs, preventive maintenance, and general upkeep of hospital equipment, infrastructure, and grounds. While this position does not require specialized certifications, it demands hands-on skills and a proactive attitude toward maintaining a safe and welcoming environment for patients, staff, and visitors.  Reports directly to the Facilities Director.  Non-exempt Position.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

General Maintenance:

1. Routine Maintenance:

• Perform basic maintenance tasks such as changing light bulbs, fixing leaks, and repairing doors, windows, and other fixtures.
• Assist in preventive maintenance for mechanical systems like HVAC units, plumbing, and electrical systems under the supervision of a certified technician or supervisor.
• Ensure that hospital areas are clean, functional, and safe by addressing minor repairs as needed.

2. Building Upkeep:

• Address minor carpentry work such as repairing shelves, painting, and patching walls.
• Clean and organize storage rooms, maintenance areas, and other utility spaces.
• Perform basic plumbing tasks such as unclogging drains, fixing leaks, and maintaining restrooms.

Groundskeeping:

1. Lawn and Landscape Maintenance:

• Mow, trim, and edge lawns, keeping hospital grounds neat and presentable.
• Plant, water, and care for flowers, shrubs, and trees, ensuring the landscaping is attractive and well-kept.
• Remove debris, fallen leaves, and trash from outdoor areas to maintain a clean and safe environment.

2. Seasonal Groundskeeping:

• Handle seasonal tasks such as raking leaves, removing snow, spreading salt or sand on walkways, and maintaining flower beds during various seasons.
• Assist in setting up and taking down outdoor decorations and signage for events or holidays.

3. Irrigation and Watering Systems:

• Maintain and repair basic irrigation systems to ensure proper watering of lawns and landscaping.
• Monitor water usage to avoid wastage and ensure plants are adequately cared for.

Safety and Emergency Response:

• Report any safety hazards or major repair needs to the supervisor or facilities management team.
• Respond to emergency maintenance requests such as plumbing leaks, minor electrical issues, or grounds-related hazards.
• Assist in keeping walkways and entryways free from hazards, such as ice, snow, and fallen branches, particularly during bad weather conditions.

Inventory and Supplies:

• Monitor and maintain inventory of maintenance tools, supplies, and materials.
• Assist in ordering supplies or coordinating with vendors for equipment and materials as needed.
• Ensure that groundskeeping tools such as mowers, trimmers, and other equipment are properly maintained and operational.

Skills & Qualifications:

• Basic Maintenance Knowledge: Understanding of basic repairs in plumbing, carpentry, electrical systems, and general facility upkeep.
• Groundskeeping Skills: Familiarity with lawn care, landscaping tools, and seasonal outdoor maintenance.
• Experience: Prior experience in general maintenance and groundskeeping is preferred but not required.
• Communication Skills: Ability to work well with hospital staff, follow directions, and report issues clearly.
• Physical Ability: Capable of lifting heavy equipment, working in outdoor conditions, and performing physical tasks for extended periods.

Work Environment:

• Work will be split between indoor maintenance tasks and outdoor groundskeeping duties.
• May be exposed to varying weather conditions, especially while performing groundskeeping tasks.
• The role involves working in and around hospital facilities, requiring attention to safety and hygiene protocols at all times.

FUNCTIONAL DEMANDS

Functional Job Requirements:

Job requirements include, but are not limited to: sitting, standing, walking, kneeling, bending, squatting and reaching. Requires good finger dexterity, repetitive motions with hands and fingers.  Requires ability to have good vision and hearing. Pushing and pulling equipment may be necessary. Must possess ability to communicate effectively in English, both verbally and in writing. Additional languages preferred.
