JOB SUMMARY: The Oncology Infusion Nurse is responsible for delivering specialized, high-quality nursing care to oncology patients receiving chemotherapy, immunotherapy, blood transfusions, and other infusion treatments. They work closely with oncologists, pharmacists, and other healthcare professionals to ensure patient safety, education, and comfort during treatment. Non-exempt position. Reports to Oncology Director.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
Patient Care and Infusion Administration:
- Administer chemotherapy, biotherapy, blood products, hydration, and other IV medications in accordance with prescribed protocols.
- Monitor patients for adverse reactions during and after infusion therapy.
- Perform venipuncture, access central lines, and manage implanted ports and other vascular access devices.
- Manage infusion pumps, ensuring accurate programming and functionality.
Assessment and Monitoring:
- Conduct pre-treatment assessments, including vital signs, physical symptoms, and laboratory results.
- Monitor patients for signs of complications, including infusion reactions or disease-related symptoms.
- Provide immediate interventions for infusion-related emergencies (e.g., extravasation, anaphylaxis).
Education and Support:
- Educate patients and families about chemotherapy regimens, potential side effects, and at-home care.
- Offer emotional support and guidance to patients and families coping with a cancer diagnosis and treatment.
Coordination and Documentation:
- Collaborate with oncologists, pharmacists, and other interdisciplinary team members to ensure individualized care.
- Maintain accurate documentation of treatments, patient progress, and adverse events in electronic medical records (EMRs).
- Assist in scheduling follow-up treatments and coordinating diagnostic tests or referrals.
Compliance and Safety:
- Adhere to infection control protocols, safety standards, and handling of hazardous drugs (e.g., chemotherapy agents).
- Ensure compliance with institutional policies, OSHA, and regulatory guidelines.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Education/Experience:
- Registered Nurse (RN) license required. Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) preferred.
- Basic Life Support (BLS) required.
- Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) required.
- Completion of Oncology Nursing Society (ONS) provider card course required within 6 months.
- Chemotherapy/Immunotherapy Administration Provider Card through the Oncology Nursing Society (ONS) required within 6 months.
- Minimum of 2 years of nursing experience required, with at least 1 year in oncology or infusion therapy preferred.
Skills and Competencies:
- Strong IV insertion and vascular access management skills.
- Excellent patient assessment and critical-thinking abilities.
- Compassionate communication and patient education skills.
- Ability to manage stress and work in emotionally challenging situations.
Work Environment and Physical Demands:
- Work is performed in outpatient infusion centers, hospitals, or clinics.
- Frequent standing, walking, and handling of medical equipment.
- Exposure to chemotherapy agents and infectious diseases; adherence to protective measures required.

Functional Job Requirements:
Job requirements include, but are not limited to: sitting, standing, walking, kneeling, bending, squatting and reaching. Requires good finger dexterity, repetitive motions with hands and fingers. Requires ability to have good vision and hearing. Pushing and pulling equipment may be necessary.
