JOB SUMMARY: The Oncology Nurse Practitioner (ONP) provides comprehensive care, in conjunction with the Physician, to patients with cancer, including assessment, diagnosis, treatment planning, and follow-up care. They play a key role in managing symptoms, coordinating treatment, and supporting patients and their families throughout the cancer journey.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Patient Assessment & Diagnosis: Conduct comprehensive physical exams, order and interpret diagnostic tests (e.g., blood tests, imaging), and assess disease progression.
- Treatment Management: Develop and implement individualized treatment plans, including chemotherapy, immunotherapy, radiation therapy, and palliative care.
- Symptom & Side Effect Management: Address treatment-related side effects such as pain, nausea, fatigue, and neuropathy.
- Billing and Coding: Stay abreast of current parameters specific to the treatment of oncology patients from a professional and technical perspective.
- Patient Education & Support: Educate patients and families on diagnosis, treatment options, potential side effects, and self-care strategies.
- Care Coordination: Collaborate with oncologists, surgeons, radiologists, nurses, social workers, and other healthcare professionals to provide integrated care.
- Palliative & End-of-Life Care: Provide pain management and emotional support for patients in advanced stages of cancer.
- Clinical Research & Evidence-Based Practice: Stay updated on the latest oncology treatments and may participate in clinical trials or research.
- Prescribing Medications: As an advanced practice provider, ONPs can prescribe medications, including chemotherapy, pain management drugs, and supportive therapies, depending on state regulations.
QUALIFICATIONS & REQUIREMENTS:
- Education: Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) or Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) with a focus on oncology.
- Licensure: Active Texas Registered Nurse (RN) license and Nurse Practitioner (NP) certification.
- Certification: Board certification as an NP (e.g., AOCNP® – Advanced Oncology Certified Nurse Practitioner by ONCC is preferred).
- Experience: Prior experience in nursing oncology is typically required.
- Skills: Strong clinical decision-making, patient communication, symptom management, and ability to work in a multidisciplinary team.
