JOB TITLE:   

Assistant University Extension Educator - Wind River Indian Reservation

JOB PURPOSE:   

Extension Educators are part of the University’s educational outreach system. In keeping with the University’s status as a land-grant institution, Extension Educators form an essential link between the people of Wyoming and the teaching, research, and service missions of the University. The primary function of these employees is to provide non-credit education to an off-campus clientele. Extension Educators provide Wyoming youth, adults, and communities with life-long learning opportunities, especially through the application of research-supported information and leadership skills.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:  

The individual in this position will serve as a representative of the University of Wyoming (UW), maintain relationships with the Shoshone and Arapaho Tribal Councils, utilize advisory committees and other input to determine educational needs. Primary duties include but are not limited to: 

  • Provide educational programming in 4-H Youth Development, and serve as a resource to connect residents to ANR and CVH resources, as needed.
  • Provide leadership and management for UW Extension, WRIR office.
  • Serve as Co-PI for the FRTEP grant.
  • Support of the Wind River Agricultural Producers Association in coordination with the ANR Educator in Fremont County.
  • Delivery of a comprehensive 4-H Youth Development program that embraces the culture of the Wind River Indian Reservation. This function is realized through existing and new youth clubs, 4-H afterschool programs, school enrichment activities, and other educational programming. Youth Development duties include but are not limited to:
    • Implement educational programs, policies, materials, and activities as part of the overall efforts of the Wyoming 4-H program and the identified needs of the Wind River Indian Reservation clientele. 
    • Organize, coordinate, and support participation in 4-H events, camps, clinics, contests, and fairs. 
    • Provide leadership in recruiting, training, and retention of adult volunteers.
    • Provide leadership in recruiting and retaining youth members in clubs. 
    • Provide leadership and support 4-H Clubs, 4-H Councils, and project committees.
    • Provide information to volunteers, youth, and parents regarding educational opportunities through the use of e-mail, social media, applications, and print communication formats.
    • Foster relationships and develop partnerships with other youth serving groups, schools, or organizations.
    • Coordinate registration, supervision, and transportation for participants in 4-H related events held in other counties, across the state, or out of state.
    • Implement program evaluation, documentation, and reporting.
    • Provide administrative oversight to financial and fundraising efforts involving 4-H youth and volunteers.
    • Foster a culture of positive youth development in all 4-H programming efforts.
    • Contribute to various teams including WRIR office, multi-county area, state 4-H initiative, youth issues, and other UW Extension initiative teams.

REMOTE WORK ELIGIBILITY: 

This position provides vital support to in person customers and requires the successful candidate be available to work in the Fort Washakie Extension Office. 

The successful candidate must be eligible to work in the United States, as sponsorship for work authorization or work visas is not available for this position. 

APPROXIMATE TIME DISTRIBUTION:

4-H Youth Development: 65%

Agriculture & Natural Resources: 35%

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:  

  • An earned bachelor’s degree with academic training and/or professional experience relevant to the responsibilities of the position.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and appreciation for Native American customs, culture, and communities. 
  • Valid driver's license with a motor vehicle record (MVR) that is compliant with the University Vehicle Use Policy.

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:  

  • An earned master’s degree with an accredited college or university. Preferred degree awarded in animal science, natural resources, agronomy, agricultural economics, or cognate field clearly and specifically related to the responsibilities of this position. 
  • Demonstrated knowledge and expertise to develop and provide educational programming in small acreage management.
  • Demonstrated prior 4-H experience or other educational programming for youth audiences.
  • Demonstrated skills and abilities to organize and facilitate educational programs and activities such as; contests, workshops, camps, and/or fairs as part of the 4-H program. 
  • Excellence in ability to communicate in English both orally and in writing. Evidence documented through application materials and experience. 
  • Prior experience with Tribal Governments and Native American communities.
  • Knowledge of and appreciation for rural agricultural communities.
  • Ability and necessary expertise to work with both traditional and non-tradition agriculture.
  • Ability to address issues related to horticulture and small scale agriculture.
  • Experience recruiting, training, and managing adult volunteers. 
  • Academic training and/or experience to support mastery of specific 4-H projects.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of educational program development, implementation and evaluation. 
  • Experience teaching youth and adult audiences.
  • Experience in developing partnerships with other youth serving organizations and fostering positive relationships with community stakeholders.
  • Demonstrated teamwork.
  • Experience with underserved and/or diverse youth audiences.
  • Knowledge of Extension and the land-grant university system.
  • Knowledge of positive youth development principles and teaching methods.
