Pay Range: $18.14 - $24.49 / hour

POSITION SUMMARY:

Follows TJC patient safety goal requirements to accurately and appropriately identify the patient. Ability to perform under high stress while responding to codes including Cardiac Arrest,  RRTs, and Traumas.  Works accurately and efficiently in hospital and/or outpatient locations   (Emergency Room, Inpatient including CCU, and Outpatient Lab). Collects specimens following proper protocol from all age groups (newborns to geriatric).  Prepares patients for and performs venous and capillary collections and instructing patients on post collection follow-up.  A Resource throughout the facility to assist nurses and coworkers with specimen collections for critical and non-critical patients. Participates in continuous quality improvement activities and educational experiences in support of departmental philosophy and objectives, as well as Health System initiatives.

EDUCATION/TRAINING:

Minimum:

  • High School Diploma or equivalent
  • Successful completion of a phlebotomy course and/or one year of phlebotomy experience
  • Must provide copy of diploma/degree for highest level of education obtained

REQUIRED SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE, AND ABILITIES:

Successful completion of annual clinical, age and job specific competencies and skill verification tools required.

 

Ability to communicate clearly and calmly in English both verbally and in writing with patients, medical staff and the public.

 

 

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES:

Prepares and instructs patients for venous and capillary blood collection. Utilizes age-appropriate collection techniques.

 

Performs venipuncture or capillary phlebotomy draws to obtain blood specimens from patients following established protocols. Adheres to system policy regarding patient and specimen identification.

 

Participates in phlebotomy skills validation process and provides back-up phlebotomy functions for nursing units.

 

Replenishes supplies and equipment and maintains an appropriately stocked environment within established budgetary parameters.

 

Prepares and processes specimens utilizing appropriate equipment and following established procedures for specimen handling.

 

Performs point of care laboratory testing and EKG in the outpatient setting according to written policy and procedure

 

Performs all aspects of care in an environment that optimizes patient and environmental safety in accordance with applicable laws, regulations and compliance efforts.

 

Order, receive, and prep internal/external specimens for entire Health System.

 

Prepare specimen batches for multiple reference laboratories based on required specimen storage.

 

Investigate testing requirements and be a resource for all hospital and clinic departments.
