Job Summary:

The Departments of Medical Physics, Surgery and Orthopedics and Rehabilitation are jointly seeking new faculty at the Assistant, Associate, or Full Professor level with transformative potential for research at the interface of artificial intelligence and surgical guidance. This work could involve skills in areas such as computer data & information science, computer and systems engineering & physics with applications to address surgical problems and enhance surgical techniques. The candidate will be expected to participate in interdisciplinary and collaborative efforts with other departments, schools and colleges. Joint appointments in other departments and schools at the University of Wisconsin is expected based upon the specific candidate.

The Department of Medical Physics is the oldest and largest medical physics PhD program in the country, with an unparalleled network of research infrastructure joint with partners. Active involvement with other departments and centers in the School of Medicine and Public Health is expected, such as the Department of Surgery and the Department of Orthopedics and Rehabilitation, the Carbone Cancer Center, the Waisman Center and many others. In addition, there are many opportunities for collaboration or affiliation across campus, including the School of Computer, Data and Information Science, the School of Engineering and the School of Letters and Sciences.

Responsibilities:

The successful candidate will be expected to (1) continue their innovative, independently-funded research program in the area of artificial intelligence or machine learning in biomedical intervention and/or surgery guidance, (2) obtain and actively maintain extramural funding, (3) advise and mentor graduate students and/or postdoctoral fellows in their research and teaching activities, (4) teach in graduate course(s) and/or develop a new course, (5) participate in faculty governance activities, and (6) participate in professional, public and university service appropriate to the faculty rank.

The successful candidate will participate in interdisciplinary and collaborative efforts with other departments, schools and colleges. An essential part of these duties will be working in a collegial relationship with other faculty members.

Education:

Required

PhD in Medical Physics, Computer Science, Engineering, or a closely related field.

Qualifications:

Required:

  • Minimum of two (2) years as an independent Faculty member with an active successful extramurally funded research program in the area of artificial intelligence or machine learning in biomedical intervention and/or surgery guidance
  • Experience teaching university level courses and supervising graduate students and post-doctoral researchers
  • Record of highly cited peer-reviewed publications and presentations at national and international meetings
  • Excellent communication and presentation skills to create, present, and assess effectiveness of external scholarly processes

Preferred:

  • Experience working with a range of translational biomedical professionals on designing new algorithms for delivery of treatment

It is anticipated this position requires work be performed in-person, onsite, at a designated campus work location.

This position is part of the Wisconsin Research, Innovation and Scholarly Excellence (RISE) Initiative. Through accelerated and strategic faculty hiring, research infrastructure enhancement, interdisciplinary collaboration, and increased student and educational opportunities, RISE addresses complex societal challenges of importance to the state, nation and world. Building on UW-Madison's strengths, RISE expands the University's successful track record of connecting with communities and industry on collaborative solutions.

Over the next three academic years, UW-Madison will substantially increase current hiring levels, bringing 150 new RISE faculty to campus. Candidates hired through RISE will join a community of scholars working across disciplines, schools and colleges on research, teaching and outreach endeavors. The community will engage regularly in venues such as seminar series and colloquia to share ongoing projects and identify opportunities to work together. The University will support the community, facilitating access to research infrastructure, and funding to support broad and rich collaboration.
