What are the responsibilities and job description for the Science Instructor position at UW-Stevens Point Continuing Education?
The University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point at Wausau invites qualified candidates to apply for the position of Science Instructor as part of our Summer Upward Bound program in Wausau through the Department of Public Instruction WEOP (the Wisconsin Educational Opportunity Program). WEOP’s mission is to prepare youth to pursue higher education opportunities by providing college and career readiness programs, resources, and support. This role is ideal for individuals passionate about making a difference in the lives of high school students from low-income backgrounds and/or those who are the first in their families to potentially attend college. The instructor will be responsible for designing and teaching a curriculum that covers high school-level science topics to students entering grades 9-11.
Program Dates: June 10-July 11, 2025 (excludes July 3)
Schedule: Monday through Thursday, 10am-Noon
Daily Schedule Breakdown:
- 1 hour of instruction for 8th-9th grade
- 1 hour of instruction for 10th-11th grade
- 2 hours paid prep time
Key Responsibilities:
· Develop and deliver engaging and educational science curriculum suitable for high school students.
· Teach topics in a clear and effective manner, adapting to the diverse learning styles and needs of students.
· Assess and evaluate student progress and provide constructive feedback to help them improve.
· Maintain a positive and inclusive classroom environment conducive to learning.
· Collaborate with program staff to ensure a cohesive and supportive educational experience.
· Attend program meetings and training sessions as required.
· Effectively collaborate, communicate, and utilize the Teacher Assistant to maximize the learning experiences of your students while in the classroom.
· Provide the Teacher Assistant with the resources he/she needs to support your students outside of your classroom.
Qualifications:
· Bachelor’s degree in science, education, or a related field.
· Demonstrated experience in teaching science at the high school level, with a strong grasp of science concepts and pedagogy.
· Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with a proven ability to motivate and inspire students.
· Commitment to educational equity and ability to work effectively with diverse populations (i.e. Experience working with students who come from low-economic backgrounds and who are the first in their families to pursue college)
· Ability to design a curriculum that is engaging, informative, and accessible (i.e. Knowledgeable and experienced in delivering culturally-relevant, asset-based pedagogy, and trauma-informed care)
· Flexibility, creativity, and a proactive approach to teaching and problem-solving.
· Knowledgeable about TRiO programs or is a TRiO alumni preferred, but not required.
