Position Summary:
The Certified Welding Inspector (CWI) ensures the quality and integrity of welding processes and procedures. This role involves conducting inspections and evaluations to verify that all welding activities comply with applicable standards, codes, and specifications. The CWI will work closely with the welding team, management, and other stakeholders to identify and resolve any issues related to welding quality.
Key Responsibilities:
- Inspection & Quality Assurance:
- Perform visual and non-destructive testing (NDT) inspections on welds to ensure compliance with applicable codes and standards (e.g., AWS, ASME, API, etc.).
- Review and evaluate welding procedures, including material specifications, pre-heat temperatures, post-weld heat treatment, and weld reinforcement.
- Ensure that welding processes adhere to established safety and quality standards.
- Documentation & Reporting:
- Maintain accurate inspection records, including weld logs, inspection reports, and non-compliance documentation.
- Prepare detailed reports and summaries on welding quality issues, providing feedback to relevant teams.
- Collaboration & Communication:
- Coordinate with project managers, welding supervisors, and engineers to ensure welding standards are met.
- Advise on corrective actions or modifications needed to improve welding processes and quality.
- Training & Development:
- Assist in training and mentoring junior welders or other team members on welding procedures and best practices.
- Stay updated on welding technologies, codes, and standards to ensure industry best practices are followed.
- Compliance & Safety:
- Ensure compliance with all local, state, and federal regulations, including OSHA standards and other safety protocols.
- Promote a culture of safety, ensuring that welding operations are performed safely and without risk to personnel or equipment.
Qualifications:
- Certifications:
- Current certification as a Certified Welding Inspector (CWI) through the American Welding Society (AWS) or an equivalent recognized body.
- Experience:
- Minimum of 3-5 years of experience in welding inspection or related fields, preferably in construction, manufacturing, or fabrication environments.
- Knowledge & Skills:
- Strong knowledge of welding processes, materials, and codes (e.g., AWS D1.1, ASME Section IX, API 1104).
- Proficient in non-destructive testing methods, including ultrasonic, radiographic, magnetic particle, and dye penetrant inspection.
- Excellent attention to detail, problem-solving, and analytical skills.
- Ability to read and interpret blueprints, drawings, and welding procedure specifications (WPS).
- Familiarity with welding equipment, consumables, and machinery.
- Physical Requirements:
- Ability to work in various environments, including outdoor and industrial settings.
- Ability to lift up to 50 lbs. and work in confined or elevated spaces.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Additional certifications in specific welding techniques or advanced NDT methods.
- Previous experience working on large-scale industrial projects or in construction environments.
