VDOT’s South Hill Residency is excited to announce they are seeking a Crew Leader Maintenance to work for our Kenbridge Area Headquarters.
The Crew Leader will plan work schedules and identify/assign manpower, materials and equipment needed to accomplish the job. Determine and demonstrate proper work site protection techniques; ensure crew has proper PPE; and train crews in proper safety methods. Apply MUTCD for detours, lane closures, work zones, etc., and take corrective action when unsafe conditions are identified; provide traffic control in support of maintenance operations; and conduct on-the-job training and recommend additional training needs to Superintendent. Demonstrate considerable skill and expertise as an operator in the proper/safe use and maintenance of all equipment; apply specialized knowledge of equipment operation and maintenance techniques.
This position is designated as essential and, as such, all duties associated with this job are required during emergency situations which may include but are not limited to inclement weather, disaster response and emergency operations.
Additional positions may be filled from this recruitment within 90 days of the closing date at this and other locations within the South Hill Residency.

Minimum Qualifications
- Ability to interpret and apply work zone safety and traffic control manuals.
- Ability to lead, direct, oversee the work of others and train others.
- Skill in the use of computers and software applications.
- Safety shoes required.
- Basic knowledge of inventory procedures.
- Considerable knowledge of highway maintenance and construction practices and procedures.
- Skill operating and maintaining light and medium trucks and equipment.
- Ability to perform heavy manual labor and use hand and power tools.
- Ability to obtain CDL and DOT medical card within 11 months of employment and maintain thereafter. Must comply with DOT and VDOT policies and standards when operating CDL equipment.

Special Instructions
Position is designated as essential to emergency operations and will be required to work outside normal work hours to ensure the safety of the traveling public. Fingerprint based background check, references, work history and DMV records will be verified prior to employment. Pre-employment physical with drug screen will be required. Requires approved safety shoes. Applicants must be eligible to work in the United States. H1B VISA Sponsorship is not available.
Employees hired without a valid CDL in hand are required to obtain their CDL within 11 months of their hire date. You cannot operate commercial motor vehicles prior to receiving the necessary licensure and medical certification. New Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) regulations require entry-level drivers (drivers who are seeking to take the skills test in order to obtain a CDL for the first time, upgrade their CDL to a Class A from a Class B, or take the knowledge test to obtain a hazardous materials endorsement for the first time) to complete FMCSA- approved Entry-Level Driving (ELD) Training before the Department of Motor Vehicles can grant the requested CDL or endorsement. The course is comprised of 160 hours, on average, of training. VDOT is willing to assist with your enrollment in and payment for the course upon your acceptance of an ELD Training Tuition tenure and repayment agreement.
