The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) is seeking an individual to serve as a crew leader performing duties associated with district operations (such as field reviews, installation and Maintenance of pavement markings and messages) on primary, secondary, and interstate routes. This position may also provide technical advice to contractor staff.
Core responsibilities will include:
Review and Installation - Review requests and field conditions regarding the installation and maintenance of signs and sign structures, pavement markings and messages. Gather data and prepare drawings or sketches; and determine tools, materials, and equipment needed.
Records Preparation and Management - Prepare and maintain program and project documentation, as well as assisting in preparation of budget reports, data and records.
Leadership - Conduct on-the-job training and provide constructive feedback on the job performance of the crew. May serve in a supervisory capacity during emergencies.
Traffic Control - Provide traffic control in support of maintenance operations which includes installation and removal of traffic signs and other warning devices in a timely and appropriate manner.
Schedule and Perform Work - Position will schedule assignments received from supervisor, identify proper procedures and work assignment; review work to ensure activities are performed correctly and provide input to supervisor regarding employee performance.
Manual Labor - Perform manual labor and other maintenance tasks as needed for project completion. Complete assigned work as instructed in established time frames.
Worker Productivity - Document and report on daily crew activities, accomplishments, time and material usage. Monitor contractor performance; review and approve documentation associated with work activities.
Minimum Qualifications
- Experience coordinating and scheduling daily work, personnel and equipment, as well as providing on-site direction and technical guidance.
- Experience with traffic control device installation, investigations, data collection pertaining to sign installation, pavement markings and messages.
- Skill in the use of computers and software applications.
- Safety shoes required.
- Ability to obtain CDL and DOT medical card within 11 months of employment and maintain thereafter. Must comply with DOT and VDOT policies and standards when operating CDL equipment.
- Skill in providing and promoting good customer service to customers.
- Experience applying federal, state and VDOT regulations and standards regarding traffic control devices, work zone traffic control standards and techniques, and safety regulations.
- Experience using and maintaining various types of equipment.
- Experience tracking daily accomplishments, preparing written reports and documents.
- Experience reading, interpreting highway plans, sketches and technical documents.
Additional Considerations
- Progressive experience that reflects an increase in accountability and responsibility.
- Experience in sign and pavement marking installation and messaging.

This position is designated as essential and, as such, all duties associated with this job are required during emergency situations which may include, but are not limited to, inclement weather, disaster response and emergency operations.
Performance of these duties may require work outside of normal business hours including nights, weekends and holidays. VDOT will determine when essential positions are required to report.
VDOT utilizes a market based pay program, which has been approved by DHRM. Therefore, advertised rates of pay may or may not align with the Commonwealth pay bands.
