Job Duties
Please note, this is an hourly/wage position limited to 1500 hours within a 12-month period/averaging up to 29 hours per week (effective from the first date of employment). This position does not include the State Benefits package.
Consider working for the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT), Hampton Roads District, Jamestown Scotland Ferry in Surry County. We are seeking individuals interested in joining our team to serve as members of a ferry boat crew adhering to all US Coast Guard and VDOT regulations while representing VDOT in a positive manner. This position serves as crew member of a ferry boat of more than 100 feet on state inland waterways. Duties are routine and manual, and supervision will be provided by the Ferry Captain, or other licensed position depending on assignment.
As a part time Ferry Crew Member, you will:
- Assist in loading, blocking, and unloading vehicles.
- Oil, lubricate, service vessel, and clean machinery and moving parts in accordance with requirements.
- Perform manual custodial work and painting.
- Patrol deck to ensure safe and orderly conduct of passengers.

This position is designated as essential to emergency operations and may be required to work outside of normal work hours, on weekends and holidays during emergency situations which may include but are not limited to inclement weather, disaster response and emergency operations to ensure the safety of the traveling public in accordance with DPM 1-27, Staffing for Emergency Events.
Minimum Qualifications
- Ability to perform manual labor with a variety of hand tools.
- Ability to participate in and perform emergency response activities.
- Ability to maintain customer focus, by communicating with co-workers and the public.
- Basic knowledge of seamanship, line-handling and marine terminology.
- Valid driver’s license.
- Ability to obtain a Merchant Mariner Credential – endorsed as AB or QMED within two (2) years of date of hire.
Additional Considerations
- Hold a Merchant Mariner Credential endorsed as AB, QMED, or higher qualification.
- High school diploma or GED or equivalent experience or training.
- Hold a Transportation Workers Identification Credential (TWIC).
- Hold a First Aid and CPR certification.
- Hold a Emergency Helmsman certification.

Transportation Workers Identification Credential (TWIC), and Obtain and Maintain 1st Aid and CPR Certifications, and Wearing of safety shoes is required.

VDOT utilizes a market-based pay program, which has been approved by DHRM. Therefore, advertised rates of pay may or may not align with the Commonwealth pay bands.
