VDOT’s Richmond District, Petersburg Residency Office is seeking a dynamic Incident Management Coordinator to plan, execute, and continually review incident and emergency management operations. This position will assist with incident and emergency response covering the areas of Petersburg, Dinwiddie, Prince George and Nottoway.

Core Responsibilities for this position include:

  • Coordinate and cooperate with emergency service and incident management organizations at local, regional, state, and multi-state levels.
  • Prepare incident and emergency response plans and conduct necessary training.
  • Manage incidents, emergencies, and special traffic events.
  • Respond to incident scenes to review aspects of the incident and/or accident scene or assist as needed 7 days a week:24 hours a day.
  • Coordinate with local, regional, and statewide agencies to enhance incident response, management, and communications.
  • Serve as VDOT On-Scene Commander for high-profile emergencies.
  • Serve in an on-call capacity to assist during major emergencies, requiring response outside of normal work hours to ensure the safety of the traveling public.
  • Represent VDOT or the Transportation Operations Center (TOC) at pre-planned events or special events to include sporting events, festivals, etc.
  • Prepare and submit reports as needed.
  • Serve as the Petersburg Residency Safety Manager.
  • Manage, review, and provide feedback on requested traffic and safety studies.
  • Perform routine facility inspections.

VDOT is an emergency response agency, and this position is the core of this requirement, therefore you will work outside of normal work hours during emergency operations.

Position is deemed essential and is expected to report and assist during major emergencies.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Experience reflecting knowledge of public safety operations, emergency response and coordination relating to highway incidents.
  • Experience reflecting the ability to apply National Incident Management principles and practices to a variety of events.
  • Experience reflecting the ability to plan and schedule 24-hour public service operations.
  • Experience working independently, cooperatively with others, building consensus and promoting open communications.
  • Ability to communicate effectively orally in writing.
  • Ability to effectively problem solve and apply critical thinking to traffic operations incidents.
  • Ability to work, make sound decisions during emergency situations and, or for time sensitive situations.
  • Ability to report to incident scenes with exposure to live traffic conditions i.e., noise, fumes, dust, gases, chemicals etc. and encounter unexpected safety hazards.
  • Ability to walk or stand on uneven terrain or surfaces to review incident and, or accident scenes.
  • Valid driver's license.

Additional Considerations

  • Experience in leading 24-hour emergency operations
  • Experience in incident, emergency and special events operations.
  • Experience and training in safety and work zone management.
  • Knowledge of federal and state regulations and procedures related to incident management.
  • Knowledge and experience in transportation operations.
  • Experience in real time emergency operations, incident management, traffic management and public safety agency coordination and communications.
  • A combination of training, experience, or education in Incident Management, Emergency Management, Transportation Management or related field desired.
