VDOT’s Fredericksburg District has exciting an opportunity available in its District Operations Department. We are seeking qualified candidates to fill an ITS (Intelligent Transportation Systems) Maintenance Specialist vacancy. The ITS Maintenance Specialist ensures adequate conditions and availability of ITS assets. They oversee all ITS maintenance program activities and ensure proper execution of activities in accordance with performance criteria. They identify, assess and direct life cycle replacement and upgrade projects to include assessment of new and emerging technologies and applications. they oversee and monitor field maintenance including contractor performance and resolve utility conflicts and claims.

This position must participate in the ITS/Traffic Signal 24/7 on-call rotation.

  • Ability to work independently to set priorities, schedules, resolve issues and make decisions
  • Knowledge of systems engineering processes and systems analysis
  • Ability to communicate effectively with internal and external customers
  • Skill in problem resolution
  • Ability to follow oral and written instructions
  • Ability to gather and analyze data and reach sound, logical conclusions
  • Ability to apply system engineering technical principles and practices to complex tasks
  • Skill in the use of computers and software applications to include automated financial management programs
  • Ability to plan, coordinate and prioritize multiple assignments and competing priorities
  • Knowledge of 24-7 system operations and maintenance
  • Knowledge of network configurations and IP based communication and equipment
  • Knowledge of system and communication technologies associated with transportation systems
  • Knowledge of electrical, electronic systems maintenance, design, and troubleshooting

Minimum Qualifications

  • Valid driver's license
  • Knowledge of systems engineering processes and systems analysis
  • Ability to apply system engineering technical principles and practices to complex tasks
  • Knowledge of network configurations and IP based communication and equipment
  • Ability to communicate technical information verbally and in writing
  • Ability to plan, coordinate, prioritize multiple assignments and competing priorities
  • Knowledge of electrical, electronic systems maintenance, design and troubleshooting

Additional Considerations

  • Knowledge of systems and communication technologies associated with transportation
systems
  • Skill in contract monitoring
  • Knowledge of 24-7 system operations and maintenance
  • Ability to compile and develop financial components of budgets into contracts
  • Skill in design, installation and maintenance of fiber optic communications systems
  • Experience in traffic management systems

This position is classified as essential to emergency operations and will be required to work outside of normal work hours, on weekends and holidays during emergency situations which may include but are not limited to inclement weather, disaster response and emergency operations to ensure the safety of the traveling public.
